I really am excited about GDV2. My site is hardly 6 weeks in the making built on GDV1. A couple of weeks ago I inadvertently did a cold release of the site. Basically a celebrity endorsed it despite my not being completely ready for launch. Since then I’ve had a lot of activity making me want to keep going with what I have started. Naturally I’m worried about doing a lot on GDV1 and having to change to GDV2 just as I finish.

So, I’m wondering a few things at this point:

Is it safe to keep building a relatively new site on GDV1 at this point since V2 is presumably so close to production?
Will it be easy to move everything I’ve done from V1 to V2?
Will there be a time when I have to switch to V2? and if so when do you think that time may come?
If you don’t anticipate ever “having” to switch to V2 (at least in the near future/2 years), what significant reasons I should consider for switching?
Is it realistic to assume that it may not be until next year that V2 will really be ready for production (with addon all working and a couple GD themes available)?

I was hoping to “officially” launch by May 27th for a variety reasons. However, if it’s better to wait just a little longer and move into GDV2 first I’ll do that.

A conversion tool will be available to go from V1 to V2 when V2 is completely ready.
Code customizations may become obsolete, but as long you are using V1 without customizations, conversion should not be a major drama.

V1 will stay being supported for quite a while after V1 is available, but will eventually be retired.

    Thanks

Thanks, this helps me make a decision since I’m building this site at such an awkward time in the midst of transitioning into such a significant upgrade.

I think you mean “after V2 is available”. As long as V1 is supported for at least another 6 months or so I can feel good about keeping the pace of building my new site with V1.

yes all will be good, we recently started a new directory and used v1, it will be converted to v2 when ready.
