Managing Updates of GeoDirectory Travel Theme

I understand the concept of using child themes to protect customizations from being overwritten by theme framework updates. My question is…. what about child theme updates like GeoDirectory Travel Theme? If I tweak this theme, I’m assuming updates you provide will then require me to reapply the tweaks to future releases of your child theme? What is the recommended method of customizing child themes so customizations are not lost with updates?
