We are able to create recurring events which is awesome. This means we can have ONE page for a popular type of event that happens every week or month. This is great for SEO since you don’t constantly have a new page with no links/history you are trying to rank. However… I have a few question about strategy for recurring events.
(1) Slight Variations in Recurring Events
There are some events that – although they are recurring – have different details each time. For example, Sunday Farmer’s Markets may have different musicians or special activities each time. How can you implement a recurring event but share slightly different details for each one?
(2) Seasonality in Recurring Events
Using the Farmers Market example again, when a new season comes around, there may be a significant change in how the event is run. If you create a NEW recurring event you’ll lose the ranking/history of your previously made event. However, if you use the OLD recurring event and adjust the dates, you have other problems.
For example, if the Farmer’s Market is April to October, you will need to update the recurring schedule every April. You’ll then be showing incorrect events that never existed from October to March. Then if you update the event info to reflect changes and updates in how the event is run and operated, old events will show new event info. I guess that’s fine because future events are more important… just pointing it out.
I believe this could be resolved by allowing events to have multiple recurring schedules with separate listings/info. Maybe this exists and I’m overlooking.
(3) Annual Events
You also have signature events that happen only 1 time per year. These events are of HUGE importance and you want to rank high for them. Again, you don’t want to create a new event with a new URL, but you also don’t want to erase the history of your previous events. What’s the best way to approach this so that you’re always promoting ONE URL with the most up to date info?
I guess at this point in time the best idea is to update the event with all the new event info and stop caring about historical listings and seasons? Probably makes the most sense…
Thanks in advance for your ideas and opinions!
