I am trying to understand the search field options better and specifically the use of the Near and In options.
Why when I type a location in the search field does only the ‘In’ option display in the search field? See screenshot. In order for me to see the Near options in autocomplete I have to type “Near: xxxx”. If I type the location in the search field and press enter without selecting an autocomplete option then it returns a search as if I had selected the ‘near’ option. My concern is that it may be a bit confusing for the end user in that if they start typing the location and the autocomplete options display they will likely assume they need to click on the autocomplete option and in doing this they will only get to see listings “in” that location and not “near” that location. Can you tell me if this is the way it is supposed to be or is there an option to change the way this field functions?

You have described the way it works accurately.

To ‘force’ near searches you can disable the autocompleter for search
    in the Advanced Search settings.

‘Near’ suggestions will show for street addresses.

    Hi Alex,

okay, so when I add the ‘search by distance’ field, this field is pointless if selecting from an autocomplete ‘in’ option as it is only going to show listings within the location. Can this be changed? i.e. have it so when a user selects a search by distance option it performs a near search within the selected distance parameters? Is this something that can be built into it?
Ultimately, I like the autocomplete function as it makes it easier for end users to find locations, but I want a near search performed and I want the user to be able to select the distance parameters. Is this possible?

If you disable autocomplete for the near field, then every search will be a ‘Near’ search. The autocomplete is weighted to display locations in the database, to help users find listings on the site. If they type a street address they will also see Near autocomplete suggestions. Have you tried that?
