Ok. does the widget have a shortcode we can put on a page/post? And make that the user landing page?
Putting a widget like that on a lot of pages/posts/events/places is an awful lot of space that really takes away from the rest of the site.
Plus, like I’m sure for a lot of people – the site visitor audience (using My Favorites) is distinctly different than the users who submit places/events.
What are the options that don’t include giving up that much real estate to a huge widget?
I still don’t understand how we can direct a user to their account or favorites? I enabled the widget, but I put it on the author page. So how do I tell a site visitor how to get there?
For example, let’s say in the notification emails we want to send them a link to their account. How?
I get that GT and GD are different…exactly what changes are you referring to that I need to prepare to accept? I believe we asked dozens of time for a comparison of the two…and you refused.
Also, where is the users dashboard/account? Like where do I go to see My Favorites or the events/places I’ve added?
Thanks. When you add it from the GD Nav settings, the options don’t take on the formatting and function of the theme – so they look really out of place.
If you choose the Add Listing page choice from the regular main menu, it fits with the theme, but then you only get an option of Adding a Place.
It would be great if there were ONE place a user could go and then choose the listings they add. The way GT has it today. Log in first, then choose what to list.
To have a separate menu item for every listing type requires a lot of priority space on the nav bar – we don’t all have that to offer, especially when the formatting and function (the drop downs don’t work).
Are these the only choices?
It might be helpful to have a new category for GT to GD conversion issues. I see a lot of people are having them. But here I’d like to summarize where we are so far:
Conversion Tool:
converts events and placesPending Stiofan/Paolo (what will be fixed and what will we have to do manually?):
Connection between places & events gone
Custom Recursions correct on listings page, but not on side widget on event detail page. shows only first recurrence
Category top descriptions missing
Event dates – randomly missing on GD widgets
Package Features – for example, allow recurring events on Package X did not convert over
Clear explanation of Login, Add Event, Add Business (vs GT way of offering Add Event/Biz on one page).Must update manually:
Permalink Settings
Widgets
Sidebars
Notification Emails
Menus (event and place post types)
Reset Blog PageGT to GD Theme Changes:
Lose breadcrumbs, sidebars and widgets on all posts/pagesHelpful Conversion Tools:
WP Staging (https://wordpress.org/plugins/wp-staging/)
Widget Importer & Exporter (https://wordpress.org/plugins/widget-importer-exporter/)I still don’t understand the log in Add Listing process.
I’ve added the page for “Add Listing” to my top navigation. When clicked, it goes to:
domain/add-listing?listing_type=gd_place
There is no way to submit an event unless you know to go to:
/add-listing/?listing_type=gd_eventCan someone please explain how this works (as compared to GT?)
On GT, when you clicked Add Listing, you got a choice of Add Event or Business. Then the user chose.
Is this option possible with GD? Assume I don’t want to put the login widget in a sidebar.
Thanks
Thank you. What are the precise steps i will need to do this again? As you know, this is a dummy site that will have to be trashed and recreated after the GT conversion tool is fixed (ETA?).
Also, GD Listing Bottom Section Widget. Why does the widget show dates for only some events and others are blank?
This reply has been marked as private. What’s the ETA on an updated conversion tool?
it’s on a dev site – you need admin access to see it. Tell me what email and password to use and I’ll try and set you up.
Hi – I am testing out the Newspaper theme as well on a dev site. I added the above code and without much customization everything looks great.
Except the GD supplied pages – the right sidebar is dropping below the content. I played around with the GD/Design/Listing settings but no matter what I do, the GD sidebar (map widget, etc) drops beneath the content.
Anyone fixed this yet?
OMG are you kidding? The customization required to switch is at LEAST a full week of work. Plus it all has to be done over and over. I already addressed all the issues:
https://wpgeodirectory.com/support/topic/child-theme/
https://wpgeodirectory.com/support/topic/gt-geotheme-to-gd-conversion/At a minimum, the basics are missing…blog page (RSS feed latest posts), sidebars, widgets, breadcrumbs. If you look at a post on GT and compare it to a post on any of the GD themes, you can easily see everything missing.
Also – I’ve asked this already somewhere…but where is a blog page? That was also in GT and I can’t find a way to show my RSS feed on the new template. In GT, you just chose blog template page.
If there were a way to FTP all the GD settings from the dev site – save all the widgets, options, menus, design changes, etc. Then convert the listings, then re-upload the settings – that would be dev.
But as it is, you designed the tool expecting everyone to be able to convert in an hour. And that’s not the case given the theme designs and functionality. Menus alone will take me a full day to recreate…
“My tutorial specifically shows you how to setup a dev site so you dont have to do it on a live site.”
Yes, a dev site. But not really. While I’m trying to set up GD, learn all the widgets, sidebars, new theme, etc, my live site is being changed, new listings submitted, etc. Which means, I need to manually bring over any changes while in dev mode, or reclone the site and start over from scratch with the GD settings. Neither option is great or best practice.
The conversion should work like any other website change – get everything set up first on the dev site, get all the settings right and THEN move the content. The conversion tool is backwards – it doesn’t allow for dev time while a live website is being changed.
