Thank you, Giri. I am still looking at other themes that will support ALL of my content – and still work GD because it does have a lot of great features. There are great themes out there with a lot of great options – I just need to find the right one. And I don’t like having to do it knowing my site can break any day now, nor without any way to set up a dev site due to the conversion tool being designed backwards.

There are a LOT of people who will be converting from GT to GD and I can’t speak for everyone…but I was hoping for design/option upgrades. Especially now that GT is finally working (it’s been less than a year). I wasn’t expecting to have to custom code an entire website from scratch. On a live site to boot.

Plus, the conversion tool is designed in a way that everything has to be done all at once. It would be nice to set up GD, a new theme – use a dev site while the live site is live – and THEN convert the listings.

The way you designed the conversion tool allows for NO dev time. You have to go live immediately and figure it all out on a live site.

    Stiofan:

For YOU the main thing was to convert the listings. But that’s a small step in my conversion process (and I assume you are working on the conversion tool so it works correctly?) I have over 1000 other posts I have to worry about. They need widgets/sidebars/breadcrumbs, etc. I can’t lose all that just to convert events/places.

Esp when the plugin doesn’t do nearly as good of a job highlighting the event/place connection (having the place buried on a sidebar with a little website link doesn’t do it justice – it should be highlighted more like on GT OR a choice on the option panel like map & photo)

GT treated all post types equally. Your new plug/themes do not. But I have to think about my site visitors – the majority of which come to my site on a post/page.

I need a theme that highlights ALL my content. And it would have been nice if you’d given us some notice before you shut down GT. You assumed everyone could easily just use the Starter theme and convert in a hour like you did. The conversion tool doesn’t work correctly for starters. And for businesses like mine – this is weeks of work – and some time for forethought would have been appreciated.

Every business is different – you couldn’t possibly have taken in account everything for everyone – but I do think a little more thought into website content that isn’t place/event could have been made. You had that with GT – it’s a shame you dropped it.

Thank you for all the help… I will look at everything you’ve written and made a note of the social login plugin.

There is no step by step guide for converting from GT to GD (feature by feature) so it’s one piece at a time.

Thank you. I’m still evaluating themes. I was hoping the conversion from GT to GD would be easy (as Stiofan said his was just a few hours)…and he had suggested the DS theme. It’s been 4 days of work so far, and everything I’ve done has to be trashed anyway since we can’t save any of the GD settings first and then convert the listings. It has to be backward…which means each time we start over.

But the DS theme just doesn’t offer anything for the “real” content on my site. I have over 1000 non directory posts/pages on my site and need to find something that treats them as well as the places/events. Plus GD (though in some ways better than GT) is already missing some great features of GT – especially the synergy between events/places and the ways they are connected.

So I’m just trying to find an easy theme that supports posts/pages and events/places without a whole lot of customization. My site visitors should feel like they are on ONE website – not a completely different format/layout depending on the post type. To them it should be fluid…

If that makes any sense. Converting from GT is just way way harder than I thought it would be…

Is it worth looking into Visual Composer to work with DS? Or I am going to have pick another theme all together?

I still can’t see how these links work.

    Is this the login link?
    http://wpgeo.directory/gd-login/?redirect_add_listing=http%3A%2F%2Fwpgeo.directory%2Fadd-listing%2F%3Flisting_type%3Dgd_place

And what happened to the social login that was on GT? Has that been removed?

    On my demo site:
gd-login/?redirect_add_listing (takes me to home page)
    gd-login (homepage)

So I’m afraid I still can’t figure out how to access the login screen via a link.

I’d like the answer to my questions, please. The login widget is not going on all my pages.

Think about it…the point of a directory is to provide information to people. For my site, providing information about Events/Places is a part of that information.

The people who want this information are the target audience for both my site visitors and those who pay the directory portion of the site for the listings. I would assume that is the case for most directory sites.

But the design of this plugin is to take up the first third of a sidebar with “Edit, Upgrade, Favorite”. Now you are suggesting the second third of the sidebar be a huge login widget (which will apply to less than 1% of my site visitors)

On GT, the widgets that highlighted the Place/Event connection were good. Now they are buried. When an event is @ a place, all you see is a tiny little “website” link buried on the sidebar (a downgrade from the way GT is now) and when a place has events they are buried on a tab (GT has them listed prominently in the sidebar).

The functionality of the new GD plugin is great. The focus of how the content is presented is all wrong and a huge step down from GT (which finally worked just before they abandoned it).

That said, the link you sent me just shows: try-geodirectory/?preview and only allows for Add Place. So I don’t how it will answer my questions.

Thank you. I asked the question yesterday (day before) and I didn’t get any response.

So what are all the links created by GD?
    domain.com
    /add-listing
    /add-listing?listing_type=gd_event
What is the register/log in link?

I have a lot of these hard coded in my content – there isn’t room for them on the main menu

I don’t understand why the add-listing page doesn’t offer a choice of event or place? Can I see this live on someone else’s site that offers both events and places?

What happens after someone logs in? Where are they taken? I can’t test on my demo site because I’m already logged in and it keeps taking me to the home page.

Yes, on the Navigation page, I have every box checked, and added Events and Places to every single line. But when you get to domain.com/add-listing, it only offers the place packages, not the events packages. On GT, when you get the add listing screen, you first choose Event or Place, then the packages show. But here, only places show.

Thank you so much. I don’t want to get bogged down in an overly complicated theme…but the starter directory theme just has nothing to offer my other 1000 pages of content that are not events or places. Trying to find a theme that showcases content (posts) and not only listings.

Appreciate the help. Now if I could just get the basic GD functionality working (like a user being able to add an event) I could get started on this transition.

Thank you for the thorough outline. Still waiting on the answer to the breadcrumbs…wow, I was really hoping this new theme/plugin would include everything GeoTheme had, but it seems we have to create a lot from scratch. I was really hoping to minimize all the one off customization since it is such a nightmare to maintain.

Has anyone tried Visual Composer with this theme? Seems like that would be easier for this than creating separate templates, adding breadcrumbs, etc.

Also – I just noticed. Custom Recursions did seem to come through during the conversion. when I look at a listings page, the events seem to be listed correctly. But, in the side widget on the detail page, the dates are not correct. And the place/event connection is definitely gone.

    1) Where is the page to submit events? I only see an option to add a listing (place)
    2) How do we set the blog template (in GT there is a page template for blog). It is not the home page but I need a blog page
    3) Adding on the GT to GD conversion – try to include Category Top Descriptions (the less manual work in converting, obviously, the better).
    4) How do we get Sidebars on pages/posts? They are all full width.
    4) How do we get Breadcrumbs on pages/posts?

    Thanks

    About the login/listings:

I can only see my dev server if I’m logged in but need to know the URL of the login/reg page. It would be the equivalent of GT: domain.com/?ptype=login&page1=sign_up. What is the same in GD?

I found this page: domain.com/add-listing – but I can’t find the equivalent for submitting an event. I only see submit place.

    Thanks,

How do we recreate the Blog page (not on the homepage, it’s a separate page). There are no posts on my dev blog page after the conversion. Thanks.
