At least I didn’t imagine it! This is not workable for Asia unless you want provinces and districts that generally only get used by wikipedia or the govt a detailed changelog and maybe asking users if they want this would also have been useful.
City country would have been fine. Never needed region and definitely don’t want pre populated provinces! Oh well still can’t set the address anyway…back to the other directory theme where the maps work just fine!
+1 and shortcode to add to any page
+1 for a universal search function. The CPT’s are great but we cant use GD without an improved search function
What is confusing is this, the advanced search filters add-on suggests its possible to set up a proxmity search?
From the GD add-on description
This addon extends the default GeoDirectory search widget by letting you filter search results by certain custom fields you may have added to your listings. For example if you had added a custom select field “Pet Friendly” you could then filter results that only include pet friendly listings, this could be useful for hotels, café’s, bars etc.
You can also filter by multiple values, you could set up your directory so you could search for “Pet Friendly”, “Free WiFi” listings within 10 miles of the location you enter in the “Near” field.
This plugin also integrates well with our “GeoDirectory Custom Post Types” plugin to allow you to add different filter options per post type and also search per post type.
Thanks for the update.
Unfortunately we have now taken a business decision to revisit GD for our clients when there’s a stable version with all add ons working as advertised.
Rather than continue this indefinitely, you have answered my question. It seems not using GD as the homepage will allow a static air bnb setup. Perfect.
You are right, my mistake, Yelp does use dynamic pages but they add the city name to the end of the URL on the homepage so a user knows where they are. They also have a very simple and obvious way to change locations by placing the city names on each page so it’s a one click solution.
+1 can the location switcher be removed from the menu altogether and used in a widget/shortcode or its code be used to add somewhere else
Does the location switcher contain additional GD code or can you create your own location switcher by using city links instead.
Hi
Thanks. It’s clear but not how I would like it to work along with others asking the same on the forums. I disagree with the logic.
See airbnb, yellowpages,yelp,tripadvisor
All of these global directories take you back to homepage that doesn’t change when you hit the logo – this is also crucial for marketing.
All other leading directory themes let you do this
GD does a fantastic job with URLs but users won’t stay on the site if they have to switch locations to get back to the start.
If we forget its a directory for a minute, would you build a international website without a way to get back to the hompage in one click.
While you don’t support customizations, please can you let me know which part of the code sets the location as dynamic.
Can this be changed to static for homepage only without breaking the rest if GD
Many thanks
Hi
I don’t see a new version. I am unable to use GD without being able to set addresses on the map.
Please advise when the fix will be released.
Thanks
Its clearer
2) If through the location switcher they change location, they set a session. The hope page of the website will show listings for that location only, until the user doesn’t switch back to another location (and set another session) through location switcher or breadcrumb links.
Do you mean does switch back or does not switch back.
I think you mean if my homepage is London and I switch to another city Bangkok there is NO way for the homepage to ever be London again until I choose London in the location switcher or clear my browser cache.Or until the session is cleared (browser windows closed or leave the website to visit another website and than visit back the directory).
So if I set a default city as London – does this mean that the only way my users can ever get back to this page if they visit another city is to use the location switcher or clear their browser cache??!! If they go off to another website I expect the last GD visit will be cached in their browser??
Are you saying that I can not have a GD homepage or default page that always shows a default city/map starting point of my choice e.g. London
Its extremely important to present a homepage location to users that does not change in terms of location/map starting point – so no matter where they go on the site they always know that if they hit the home button this will take them back to the location they started in. Why would a user want to use a location switcher every time they want to go from the city they are browsing in e.g. Bangkok to get back to the home default city e.g. London
I really hope it doesnt work this way – as its a showstopper
Thanks
What I meant was is GD expecting an address to be entered in a certain format as per example above, these are all valid entries in Google Maps when used for google places, business and search in maps
I wasn’t sure if the set address issue was due to the format it was entered into GD
