Just wanted to chime in here because I’ve been having the exact same problem:

When using the administration panel to edit the design of the search (GeoDirecotry >> Design >> Search), placing any string in the “Search field default value”, that string would actually be used as the search string if this field was left blank on the front-end.

I’m also happy to report that this SEEMS to have been fixed with the recent upgrade to GD1.1.2 and subsequent add-on upgrades.

I have a different problem with the advanced search, which I will start a separate thread on, but wanted to at least post here for anyone else with the same problem to say that it seems this issue can be fixed by upgrading to the latest version.
