I am trying to understand categories and their subcategories as relates to GeoDirectory.
1. I put a GD>CPT Categories widget on the Home Page and also on the Listing Page.
2. I enabled Count on the widgets.
3. I looked at the counts and they don’t seem proper to me. Could you take a look and check it out?4. I have inherited categories from prior directory — and I’m trying to bring sub-categories under logical main categories.
We have loads of churches, so I put Churches as a Main Category, with
Churches – Baptist
Churches – Presbyterian
etc. as SUB-categories under that. The category Churches has more than 6 ITEMS, as well as oodles of SUB-Categories, but only 6 items appear to be showing. How is this calculated?
What am I doing wrong?
BTW, I deactivated everything but GeoDirectory for testing.

February 22, 2018 at 11:49 am #418746I am guessing you imported the listings using a CSV file and only added the listings to a subcategory, instead of to a category and subcategory.
There are indeed only 6 churches in the Churches category. Thanks
February 22, 2018 at 6:35 pm #418796Oops! Yes, I inherited them.
I understand…when I look at Listing page of Category parent and all its subs…the Listing Page is actually showing ALL items of parent PLUS subs.
So the listings = parent listings (6) plus all other sub-category listings.
That’s why pagination shows large number.
Sorry…should have known.
Question: If item is in MAIN category and also has sub-category…does it appear on above Listing Page twice?
February 22, 2018 at 10:09 pm #418839No, a listing will only show once in each category it belongs it.
It will show once on the CPT pages, once on the cat pages and once on the sub-cat pages. Thanks
March 26, 2018 at 12:47 am #423280Okay, I’m definitely doing something wrong, but am trying to correct it.
For instance, I have churches. And yes, they were imported wrong, with the default category being something like Baptist, when it SHOULD have been a default category of Churches and a SUB-category of Baptist.
Sorry…inherited this project.
To test what I need to do, I went into ONE church: First Baptist Coconut Creek.
I changed its first category to Churches.
Under that I chose its SUB-category of Churches-Baptist-Independent.Under Detail, all is splendid and those two designators properly show.
However…problem arises when I search for Category Churches on front page.
When I click the little search button, I go to Search page (okay, this is GOOD!)
But on that page, I have put a GD>Category widget in Appearance>Widget.
It is showing ALL categories, not just Category Churches and Sub-Category of those churches.
(There are only 7 churches…one is the First Baptist Coconut Creek, which I THINK is in properly. So at least ITS Sub-Category should be showing? Or maybe ALL Churches subcategories should show?)I am getting A-Z…Attorneys, Plumbing, etc. Thought I had this working before, but goofed something up.
My widget image is attached. (Image 1)
Could you tell me what I’m doing wrong?
Know I’m figuring this out late in the game, but once I get it moving right, I’ll export, fix, and re-import.
I just want this ONE record to work properly, so I can see precisely what its export looks like.
Other 2 images are:
Image 2 is START of search page (lots of categories under it.)
Image 3 is start of actual LISTINGS on search page WAAAAY below start of multitudinous categories!Any ideas?

GD Popular categories isn’t ‘linked’ to search results and will continue to show all popular categories even when searching on only one category.
Demo example here: https://wpgeo.directory/starter/?geodir_search=1&stype=gd_place&sgd_placecategory%5B%5D=&s=morimoto&snear=&sgeo_lat=&sgeo_lon=
March 26, 2018 at 1:27 pm #423366Alex, that is the CPT Categories widget.
That widget only adapts to locations or CPT and categories, not to a search page.
March 26, 2018 at 3:20 pm #423425Ah, I sorta understand. If on Search, I search for “Bob” — how in the world would you know what Subcategories should show? Could be all of them!
My challenge will be to figure out if ONLY a single Category is chosen and show the widget only then. For another day (maybe tomorrow!)
Thank you guys for answering me so quickly! Appreciate your knowledge!
