Disappointed…is there no way for custom post types to use the same categories?

    Hello,

I’m using the custom post types plugin, but I don’t want to make a custom post type, I just want to be able to have users choose if they wish to add an address or not. I noticed I could un-check “is required” on most of the fields, but not the addresses. Alternatively I tired creating a 2nd post type “web,” then hit the check mark for “does not require geographic position,” but then this 2nd post type can’t have it’s listings under the same categories as the places post type 🙁

I can see this being solved very easily if we could simply remove the mandatory requirement for addresses…

Or alternatively, allow multiple post types to be displayed on one category archive page.

Honestly I don’t know if I can use this plugin now. Is there a work around?

    Thanks for the help!

If I recall correctly, this was discussed a while ago between the developers as a possible option in V2.
I will get the developers to have a look at your question.

It is not solved that easily, because mixing listings with and without addresses requires more than making the fields optional. It affects the category pages and maps and search etc.

Do you just want to give users the option to have the address hidden and the listing not to be shown on maps?
Or do you want absolutely no address required?

    Thanks

    Hi Guust,

Thank you for the prompt reply! Yeah…I would need no address as an option. I don’t really use search by address, and wouldn’t mind that option being disabled, but if a listing has an address then it would show in the map, else it wouldn’t show. These days there are so many different online only businesses that its very important for users to be able to search for them alongside their local counterparts IMO.

You can always do what I did for my directory and hide the address so only the city and country are displayed on the listing. Because the actual address is not important to my directory but I wanted users to be able to see what country/city a listing was located in this works perfectly for me, although it is an all or nothing proposition.

Thanks for the suggestion Justmark. The issue is that I would like online-only businesses (such as an etsy account for example) to be able to list on my directories without having to put a bogus address or their home address.

The idea has been flagged. The developers will take a look at ideas like thus once all the features tk be ported to V2 are complete.

Cool. I think hiding the addresses and disabling the address on the maps for a custom post type would be an acceptable workaround, but only if that custom post type can be listed under the same categories as another post type…else it’s useless. Alternatively there could be an option to simply hide an address (from details and maps) if a box is ticked, it’s better then nothing. There would just need to be something to alert users if they have an online only business or resource they want listed, that they would need to select that option instead of simply entering in a bogus address crowding the legit ones. “This address is online only”
