When creating a new CPT, it says “The listing slug name ( max. 20 characters ). Alphanumeric lower-case characters and underscores and hyphen(-) only. Min 2 letters. Usually Plural.” I want to create a CPT with a Japanese name and slug but Japanese characters don’t fit that criteria. I’ve worked on sites that had English and Japanese and there is a way to translate the listing slug to Japanese using WPML. However, for this site I was hoping to not have to install WPML just for that one thing since this is a single language site… is there any way to have a Japanese listing slug for a CPT without WPML?

    Hi kairei,

This custom post type slug should be translated via WPML custom post type slug translation. WPML provides feature to translate custom post type slug for each language.

I think you have translated custom post type slug in past. See example: https://wpgeodirectory.com/support/topic/wpml-compatibility-2/#post-370514

    Let us know.

    Hi Kiran,

Yes, I have done it before, but that was for multi-lingual sites where I already needed WPML installed. This question is a little different because this is not for a multi-lingual site. It will only be in Japanese. The idea of installing 3 extra plugins that I will only use to translate a single CPT slug is not ideal. I thought it was probably the only way but just wanted to confirm…

If it is the only way, I wonder if this is something that could be considered for the future (allowing more than just lowercase letters, underscore, and hyphen in the CPT slug). I imagine all the people with native languages that don’t fit into just “lower case ASCII” would appreciate being able to keep their single-language sites clean (with minimal plugins) and still get to have CPT slugs in their languages.

Is this a technical limitation or is it something worth putting in a feature request for?

    Thanks!

    Hi,

We have added validation to CPT slug, so it checking CPT slug for some characters during CPT add/edit. Because some non-technical users may insert incorrect characters in slugs and this may results in 404 errors.

I accept your suggestion, and will discuss with our team. If it not required much code changes then we will implement it.

    Thanks,
    Kiran

Ok, yes, that would be great! GD has done a great job to support multiple languages in almost every way. This would be one more very useful thing for non-English customers.

Please let me know, one way or the other, after you’ve discussed so I know what the plan is and can move forward accordingly. Thanks!
