    Hi,

I’d like places in a certain location to be returned if the location entered in the search form is either the acronym form or the long form (e.g., “NSW” or “New South Wales”). Is this possible?

    Thanks,
    Andrew

That field sends data to Google and if Google understands NSW then it will give you listings NEAR THE CENTER OF NSW, not IN NSW.
I doubt Google will return results like that.
Google would probably return results for “Katoomba NSW” etc, but not NSW.

The Near Autocompleter only checks your database, and will use the region names used there.

    See also https://wpgeodirectory.com/docs/gd-search/#near

    Thanks

Okay that makes sense, however I’m still confused about this –

When I type “Canberra, A” into the search box, auto-complete returns 2 lines:
    1) Canberra, ACT
    2) Canberra, Australian Capital Territory

I understand that these come from the database, however different places are returned.

On top of this, if I search for “Canberra, ACT” and just hit search without selecting an autocomplete location, a whole different set of places are returned.

    Could you explain this?

ACT and “Australian Capital Territory” are different regions in your database, you need to merge the locations: https://wpgeodirectory.com/docs/manage-location/#merge

On top of this, if I search for “Canberra, ACT” and just hit search without selecting an autocomplete location, a whole different set of places are returned.
Have another look at https://wpgeodirectory.com/docs/gd-search/#near especially point 4:

The default GD search is not an IN search, but a search NEAR THE CENTER OF.

    Thanks

Okay so just to clarify: if I type a location and then select an autocompleted location – it does not send the location to Google, it merely queries the WPGD database for places in the selected location; whereas if I type a location and hit enter without selecting an autocompleted location, it sends it to Google who then returns places NEAR THE CENTRE OF the location entered.

    Is that right?

    100% correct.
