Plugins Not Installing

Hello. I signed up for full membership. I downloaded various plugins (Events, theme, etc.) I went to add new plugin from my WordPress dashboard, uploaded the .zip file and am getting the following message from WordPress:

The package could not be installed. No valid plugins were found.
Plugin install failed.

What am I doing wrong? I have not had to input any licensing keys anywhere. Could that be the problem? If so, I can’t find where you enter them in WordPress. If that’s not the problem, could it be that I am working with a WordPress MultiSite?

Please help. I am brand new at this! Thanks!

Make sure you install themes as themes and add-ons as plugins.
