I am trying to achieve a search menu with multiple drop down options (example in picture attached)
I want the person searching my site to be able to select multiple items from each “category”, category examples” Hours (24 hours a day, Open Saturday, Open Weekdays only) , Category 2 to choose from, Type of Mobile Service Available (Hospital Signings, Nursing Home Signings, Private Residence Signings, Category 3 to choose from, Type of Document, (affidavit, will, car title, Closing, etc) and of course enter the zip code where they need the notary at.

I currently have it setup with one CPT and each “category” mentioned above as a parent category and then the choices setup as sub categories. This works perfect for the Notary when they are setting up their listing, but not so great for the front end user.

please tell me if I have to set up each “category” or section that I want to show up in the search menu as a drop down option as a new CPT… or is there something else i need to do?

    My website is notarybyzip.com

thanks for posting these links, I have read them at least 10 times over the last few weeks. I have tried my settings a million ways…

I have my Places and my Events… i don’t have any “events”.. I only have Notaries that will be on this website, I don’t know that I will have any need for another custom post type…. so is just having the “events” there going to be enough to satisfy the requirements of having more then one CPT?

next can you please tell me if to make this work like the menu in the picture if I need to setup each “category” as a CPT or or is having them listed as sub categories ok? I have read this a million times and tried to do the instructions step by step and I’m just not getting it to happen.. please help. thx. fyi i do have advanced search installed.

    thx

    https://wpgeodirectory.com/docs/gd-search/#select
That link explains that you can create a “select” custom field, and then add it to the search bar.
You can only add “categories”, and “select” custom fields to the search bar, apart from the default “search for” and “search near” fields.

In your case, if I understand correctly, create a “select” custom field called “Type of Mobile Service Available” [what you call a “category2”], and create a “select” custom field called “Type of Document” [what you call a “category3”].

You cannot have different category drop downs, only 1.

Adding a “select” custom field is explained here:
    https://wpgeodirectory.com/docs/core-place-settings/#select

ok, so I got the added the new custom field as in the example “animals on the farm” and I added it to the advanced search and marked them to be in the menu and to be included in the search… but where do I add the “cat, dogs, mice, rats, flies” ? I added two new custom fields and they are not showing up…. frown frown frown….

Firsly, “custom post types” [CPT] like Places and Events are not the same as “custom fields”.
You enter the option values [cat, dogs, mice, rats, flies] in the “Option values” of the custom field.

PS: the example at https://wpgeodirectory.com/docs/core-place-settings/ with [cat, dogs, mice, rats, flies] is a “multiselect example”, not a “select” example.
You should review the “select” field below it.
