I’ve just a brand new installation of WordPress, added this plugin, and tried to set-up some basic fields for listings and submit an example listing. Unfortunately it’s proving quite a struggle. I’ve got two specific problems and one general question.
Setting-up fields (GeoDirectory > Place Settings > Custom Fields)
There are several fields that seem to be undeletable under the heading “List of fields those will appear on add new Place listing form”, for example, Facebook (url). However most of these do not appear on the automatically-created page mydomain.com/add-listing/I checked that this facebook field is set to “Is active”: yes. Why doesn’t it appear?
I tried making my own custom field, a checkbox. I filled on all of the relevant details, but again, it doesn’t appear on the add listing page.
The documentation doesn’t give much help.
Submitting a Listing
I tried submitting a listing even though I couldn’t resolve the above issues. When I click on ‘review your listing’ I get redirected to the home page. No listing created, and nothing to review. Is this the right plugin for me?
I can see that this is a brand new plugin and understand it will have teething problems. I was very excited when I first saw it (it does seem head and shoulders above a lot of the competition), even though some obvious issues (such as 404 errors) cropped up on the demo site. I’d really like to make it work, but in its current state it’s looking very hard to use: after one hour spent using the plugin I’m seeing that some key things don’t work (or at least don’t work as I expect them to).I wonder if GeoTheme would be more suitable for me, a general end user (not a developer), since it is a robust and mature plugin? I did search for the differences between GeoTheme and GeoDirectory, but couldn’t find any useful summaries of the key differences.
My goal is to build a directory that is truly global in a tiny niche with only a few categories (it’s a specific form of healthcare). The permalink structure is important to me: domain.com/country/city/listing. I know that GeoDirectory does it perfectly but not sure sure about GeoTheme. It didn’t seem to have ‘country’ in the demo site, but I don’t know if that is changeable or not.
Many thanks for your help, and I hope I haven’t been discouraging, because this is a very promising plugin.
June 17, 2014 at 7:33 am #4451- The fields you see are system fields and cannot be deleted but can be made inactive.
- Re the documentation, see your other post.
- The demo is currently running the new version which is being fine-tuned as we speak, so there will be some errors that will be fixed before the release.
- The current version should work out of the box, you will have to post your WP URL and login credentials in a private reply, if you want us to have a look.
- The main difference between Geotheme and GeoDirectory is that the first one is a theme, and GeoDirectory is a plugin that can be used with any theme, so allows a lot more variations.
- The URLs in the demo do include the country, don’t they? Example: http://wpgeo.directory/attractions/united-states/new-york/new-york/museum/museum-of-modern-art/
Welcome and enjoy your new project 🙂
June 17, 2014 at 7:55 am #4457Thanks Guust for clarifying the difference between Geotheme and GeoDirectory. And the URLs in the GeoDirectory demo are exactly what I was looking for : )
I have since found out that the broken submit listing form is on the automatically-generated page http://domain.com/add-listing/. It simply doesn’t work. Fresh install, page added by plugin, page doesn’t work. However I have found a form that works: http://domain.com/add-listing/?listing_type=gd_place
I will keep working on this and will get back to you if I have more questions!
Thanks again.
June 17, 2014 at 8:08 am #4460Did you do a preview from within WP admin to see the ADD listing page?
That will not work …
You need to get the links to add a listing working, and then you will find that the form works, as the URL will be /add-listing/?listing_type=gd_placeJune 17, 2014 at 8:17 am #4462Yes, /add-listing/?listing_type=gd_place does work, but /add-listing doesn’t.
So I need to create a link to /add-listing/?listing_type=gd_place and give that to users.
If I understand correctly, /add-listing/ is not actually meant to be visited.
June 17, 2014 at 8:27 am #4463Geodirectory > Design > Navigation > Show add listing navigation in menu
Make sure you set up your theme menu first.
Add-listing is a virtual page that will change depending whether people add a place, event or any other type of post (if you use custom posts).June 17, 2014 at 8:31 am #4464Thanks, I’ve understood it now!
