I have used GD on two other sites successfully. Now I am trying to build a community directory of people, centered around skills and interests. We’ve built a long list of skills and interests people can select from, in order to find each other. However, it won’t work for people to sign up for the directory and choose the skills repeatedly from a dropdown menu. I’d like to be able to layout the category choices as checkboxes, preferably nested in parent categories.
Is this possible, before I buy another license?

    Hi Alice,

You can achieve that using the “CPT” addon https://wpgeodirectory.com/downloads/custom-post-types/ . I’d like you to check out this demo link https://wpgeo.directory/ and see how it works. You’ll find different types of CPT on the listing menu item and you can use that to separate the skills and interest for your directory. Let us know if it’s what you’re looking for.

    Thanks!

Thank you. I read the page and watched the video. In the video, he adds options for the number of people that can be accommodated, and it appears that he chose “checkbox” as the field type, but it shows up in the form as a dropdown.
My main problem with competing directory products, is that the choice of items is in a dropdown. I would like it to be where a person adding a new listing can choose multiple options (categories) as checkboxes.
Do you have a screenshot of a form with a custom post type where the Add New shows a large number of checkboxes?
In my example, people could fall into multiple categories and subcategories.
For example, if you could choose from
    Languages (Beginner, Intermediate, Expert)
    Runner (Beginner, Intermediate, Expert)
    Travel (Local, National, International)
…one person might be a beginner at a language, an expert runner, and a national traveler. They would need to choose multiple options.

    Hi Alice,

you just need to go to Place Settings, double click on the category field and change the category display type to checkbox.

Let us know if this helps.

    Thanks

Thanks – I was able to figure this out. However I can’t seem to figure out how to sort on the checkbox items, or even the titles of the MultiSelect. Ideas?

That’s because there is no option to do that. If I’m not wrong they are sorted alphabetically.

    Thanks

I’m sorry… what I mean is, I want users to be able to search the directory by that?

OK, thank you so much for sticking with me…

We upgraded the plugin to the latest version, and now it seems that I cannot choose for MultiSelect to display as checkboxes. I had it set that way, and after the update, the option is not there? Maybe I am not seeing it. It switched to a dropdown now in the Add Person form.

    Hi Alice,

it appears that it was a bug. Stiofan checked and fixed it already. It will be in the next release.

    Thanks for spotting this!

    🙂
