I was looking at my tables and I noticed that they are very different between one site using a newer version of GD plugins and another site using older GD plugins. I’ve updated the older plugins so I think they’re all current. Do I need to remove old tables?

Also, a different question, but relevant to this, if I’m starting a project that was stagnant for a long time with old GD plugins’, is it better (in regard to the GD plugins) to just start completely over fresh with a clean install? Or, as long as I update them of course, does it make completely no difference so I may as well keep the structure and content I already developed? The idea of starting fresh with all new installations on my new server just seems refreshing in a lot of ways. But, that may just be an illusion because I don’t “know” if it really matters. Afterall, they’re inevitably going to change…

Unless you are updating from GeoTheme the tables, and updating, shouldn’t be a problem.

Some addons are old enough that they cannot take advantage of WP Easy Updates, though, so a mnual update it required. See this doc for info about that:

I don’t feel like you answered my question or explained anything I’m observing.

Can someone explain the naming, why it’s so different, if it’s something I need to worry about?

The prefix is set in the site on install. Is that what you mean?

    Thanks for your time!

I was mostly wondering if there was any benefit to removing tables I don’t need anymore or any benefit to starting completely over with a fresh install.

I’m asking because I had a site that has been through years and years of updates. This site hasn’t gotten anywhere. I want to start working on it now that I may have more time. It would be great to use the content/site. But, it wouldn’t kill me to start completely over.

I am moving to a new server. I downloaded the original old site. But, I had some troubles migrating it to the new server. So, part of me just wants to start over.

Also, GV2 is coming out possibly in a couple months. Therefore I feel like it may be better to wait. But, I have more time now to mess with this than I may later. So ideally I could use the old content and get busy on using the site now taking advantage of my old content. I just don’t want to do that if using the old site is going to be worse maybe because of that old code lingering potentially making it more likely to have issues (loading speed, glitches of any sort, etc…)?

So, I would like some guidance since you guys know more about how GV2 is coming along. Most notably, will transitioning from the old to the new will be as good as a fresh install?

An uninstall can remove the tables, then a re-install and an import of the listings is a fresh install. Every upgrade takes advantage of new technologies to improve speed and performance wherever possible. Table counts do not have any appreciable impact.
