You can simply uncomment it if you want to keep it, but it is also hiding the category selector.
I must be missing something. I don’t see a sidebar on the page.

For the layout, there may be a way to set the ‘near’ field to appear before the ‘search for’ field, I will flag your question for the developers and they will let us know if that is possible.
Refining the search, I don’t think this is possible, but, again, the developers will let us know for sure. Certainly there isn’t a “Refine Search” feature available with GD at this time.
If you want to disable the “click on something” functionality then just disable the search autocompleter”
GD – Settings – Advanced Search – Enable search autocompleter? – UNCHECK
Hmm…try clearing your cache. I just used the frontend form and I didn’t see the issue.
Which browser are you using?
The commas should be ok, it is probably the package that was the hangup.

You can add as many categories as you like but only one default category.
