No worries Guust, just so you have an understanding of why I am seeing this if it is useful to you my scenario is that I am running an import test of 22,000 records that involves, as you would imagine, a number of CSV files to import which are all pre-generated so I am just uploading maybe 5 files with 1,500 records, then exporting so I can sync with my server, then uploading the next batch and so on… so I am tending to stay on the import/export page between importing/exporting.

Hi Paolo, yes, you are right, I do get a featured image from the first image listed. It’s the detail page that doesn’t get that image unless a manual save is performed on the listing.
I am in the middle of a 22,000 record import test right now so it’s not really a good time to let you in.

I’ll post back when the server is not under load and is fairly static.

    Thank’s

I think it’s a page refresh thing. It’s just happened again. If I don’t refresh the page between exports after importing, the wrong count is displayed, i,e,. export, import, then export again without refreshing the page, then the count from the first export is displayed.

Just a quick follow up for further clarification. The image is set as a featured image it is just that the place has to be manually saved in the admin area for the image to display in the detail page on the front end

Perhaps an alternative and simpler illustration is to think of a file explorer tree view, it’s counter intuitive to be able to see all files at all levels of folder in the tree view.
A file that lives in my games folder should not be visible in the root folder

    Hi Stiofan
    I have a Greek takeaway/restaurant

The site has the following category structure

    Food
    —–Takeaway
    ———-Greek
    ———-Italian
    ———-etc…
    —–Restaurants
    ———-Greek
    ———-Italian
    ———-etc…

If the site has a restriction of one category for an unpaid listing then in version 6.0.0 I could place my listing under either Greek taeaways or Greek restaurants

Under the current version I would have to allow 3 categories just to be placed under Greek takeaway. (Food, Takeaway, Greek)

    Now, I own a Healthfood store/Pharmacy
The site has a category Hierarchy of

    Stores
    Health and healing
    Pharmacy

With the required 3 categories just to be able to place a restaurant in the correct category I could list actually list my heralthfood store in all three of the above top level categories without needing to upgrade.

From a data design point of view this also makes no sense to have to list all/any parents.

To have every single record listed at a top level category also makes a bad design choice

To come back to your question then
Extremely more importantly a visitor looking under Greek restaurants or takeaways is not going to find me in either if I restrict to one category because I would have to list my restaurant under Food. This makes for an extremely unattractive visitor experience and therefore makes our site less than useless to businesses who can;t be found

The issue is far more complex than this but I’m sure if you think it through you’ll start to gain an understanding that it is impossible to set a category limit that makes any sense if places have to be listed in all parent categories. It’s just quite literally nonsense.

The only choice I have is that I am going to switch off the front page map as it doesn’t achieve what it used to achieve. I am going to not list in parent categories.

I’ll try to find a way of getting the map that is shown on the listings page, which works perfectly, without the need for parent associations, onto the home page.

I’ll let you know if/how I am able to achieve this

It’s a shame that the change between 6.0.0 and 6.0.2 happened.

By parent category do you mean all parent categories? or just the top level category, we nest categories to 3 levels? If all parent categories then how does that work with category restrictions settings in the Prices and Payments settings? If a place needs attaching to all levels and we only want to allow for two categories for an unpaid listing does that mean we have to actually allow for 6 categories to be chosen, whch would then mean that the category restriction is useless

OK, so for your information We were able to manually delete the top level category from a place in the admin area, in fact it was this action that caused us to notice the featured image going missing.

    1 please see: https://wpgeodirectory.com/docs/basic-installation/#media

We can’t remove that setting being a WordPress setting and not a plugin setting. But it is mandatory to be enabled for GD to work.

Brilliant, thank you, I totally missed that. I’ll make the change.

I’ve just downloaded v1.60 to test and see if I’ve always been wrong all this time. I’ll let you know asap.

I’ll restore my site to a point that it worked so you can see if that is helpful?

Also the listings map works fine without places being attached to top level

In settings >> media, you had “Organise my uploads into month- and year-based folders” disabled.

Yes this was deliberately set to enable simpler ftp’ing of images, are you suggesting that disabling this setting does not work and the option to disable shouldn’t be there? or is there a mistake I have made? Perhaos this feature should be removed?
Thank’s for taking the time to look again.

Listings in GeoDirectory must be attached to both sub and parent category. it will not work if you only attach them to the sub catgeory.

It used to work, this problem appeared somewhere between version 6.0 and 6.2. I can restore to a backup made 9 days ago and all is good. I am aware that attaching to the top level category fixes the home page map as I pointed this out in the opening post.
The map on the listings page works fine without needing to attach to top level categories.
I could find nowhere in the changelogs that was deliberately introduced changed behaviour, I checked before posting

I restored to a backup made 9 days ago prior to upgrading Geodirectory.
and places were showing fine. I then went through upgradig every plugin one by one and checking after each upgrade and all was ok until the upgrade of Geodirectory and then everything disappeared with no places found messages.

It is odd that the listing map still works without needing places to be at top level and if this really is the new expected behaviour then it would have been useful to have had such a major change documented. Saves a lot of frustration.

Thanks again for taking the time to look into this issue

p.s. to be called a bug, you must be able to recreate it every time you perform an operation, can you?

    Becuase we can’t.

I can reproduce this bug every time, I even gave you access to our system so you could try it out for yourselves, happy to help you reproduce, please treat this issue with the respect it deserves,

If you wish me to talk you through images getting deleted when places change categories on our system then please let me walk you through it, It happened again ten minutes ago.

I was proving that no records found on the front end home page message was as a direct result of an SQL query that only looks for places attached to top level categories for another thread I have running on here when I came accross the problem.

It seems to be frustratingly and unnecessarily difficult to get acceptance a clearly defined and re-producable bug.

If you care to add your own image to any one of the places in our site then I will just change the category that business belongs to and you can see for yourself that it has gone.

I would also appreciate a solution to the missing places on the home page which has absolutely NOTHING to do with map markers as indicated in this thread https://wpgeodirectory.com/support/topic/front-page-map-markers-disappeared-after-updating-geodirectory/#post-196749

    Kind regards

    James

    Thanks

Do you have an estimated time for a fix for this bug?

I can see youi have added a map marker, why is it not showing on the map on the home page if this is the solution?

I repeat, my places disappeared off the map on the front page after updating geodirectory.
I can only get places to show on that map if they are attached to a top level category.

Are you going to fix this bug?

You have missed the point. No records, with or without markers appear on front page unless they are attached to a top level category, When can this be fixed?

    https://highstreetbeacons.com/places/
They all show on map there.
