Thanks guys, I’ve wondered if I should offer free listings and how I would implement them. I think my biggest fear with free listings is that they may go bad (if the business goes out of business).

So, it is nice to know that a free listing can be renewed. I’ll have to wrap my brain around how to make this happen. Ideally to prevent bad content (no longer in business) a listing could be free and expire in 6 months. Before expiring the listing would send a notification. The lister would then renew or upgrade. That sounds pretty nice to me! I can see how starting up a directory in this way would be a good idea.

I could even start a listing for someone, they can claim it, then the are forced to upgrade to a free listing or one of the paid. That would be nice.

So, when and where does this renewal appear? And do both free and paid listings prompt users to renew the same way?

This sounds interesting. Could you break down how this works?

Right now I have a package titled “Free” under GD/Prices and Payments/Prices. This Free Package is set to “Expire” under “Expire, Downgrade to”.

Does “Renewal for free package?” in the General Tab by default force an upgrade if unticked?

Also, could I make it so the free listing doesn’t disappear when it expires changing “Expire, Downgrade to” the same package “Free Package” so it essentially doesn’t expire? And in this case if “Renewal for free package?” in the General tab is unticked would they be forced to upgrade when updating the listing?

This was sort of hard to explain… lol

Thanks, yes, the Popular Categories on the homepage in the top section below the search fields.

Does Popular Category sort by popularity? meaning, does it show the most popular category first? It appears to right now but I’m not sure if that’s accidental or not. If it’s in fact sorting by popularity I’ll probably leave it for now because if so at least it is correctly labeled.

I just added another listing and it worked. So far I’ve only been able to repeat this problem 3 times out of a lot of listings I’ve added. So, it seems random. I’ll let you know if it happens again. But, it doesn’t seem to be related to adding the video share url to the listing before publishing, at least this time it worked fine…

At first I thought the Popular Category on the home page may not sort by categories with the most. So, I was going to change it to something like “Common Categories” but that didn’t seem accurate either. Then I looked at another CPT that had more listings and it appears it “may” sort by Popularity. So, if Popular Categories actually sorts by popularity then I may just leave it. But, I was trying “Common Categories” so if you want to test it common categories may be good to try… thanks!

Awesome, so the Popular Location widget in V2 may be such that it doesn’t show cities with past events only, that would be awesome! Esp. if it can sort by popularity and filter out empty cities 🙂

    Thanks!

The description does not say it sorts, but it does say something “return a list of popular locations” which clearly sounds like/implies it would display “popular locations” and render popular locations when one is selected.

Thanks for flagging it! Hope you’re having a great week!

If someone picks a particular city they should either see listings in or at least in proximity to that city. If there are not relevant listings to show then that city shouldn’t be an option.

Right now I live near Forest City. If I click on Forest City and see nothing then I missed out on clicking a city that has a lot of listings.

After clicking Forest City the site goes to the location page with forest city selected. As a new visitor I have no way of knowing that Forest City is a popular city but has no listings. I see “Popular Categories” none of which are forest city, but as a new visitor I don’t know this. I think 1.) because it said forest city was popular and 2) I picked forest city that 3) now it shows forest city in the advance search field that 4) popular categories must be in forest city. When I click one it’s not in forest city at all because it’s a CPT and somewhat as you suggested without a location filter. So, then I go back and select different CPT’s and none of them show anything in Forest City. Now I have just wasted a lot of time accomplishing nothing because the popular location widget showed me a location that has nothing in it.

As a site owner I do not want to subject my visitors to all this. So, the popular location widget is really only good for sites that don’t have events in locations where listings are not found or sites that do not have events and only listings and site owners that constant check the popular locations for empty locations.

I really just want to know, is there any chance they could fix this widget so that it is indeed “popular locations” because it is at least sorted by popularity and even better sorted by popularity and filters out empty cities?

Could someone please make it so that the Popular Location widget is indeed sorted by popularity?
