Ok, great. Is there an ETA for this to be included in the next release?

Yes, it looks fixed on the staging site, thanks. I’ll apply to the live site… What did you do?

Sorry for the delay, I missed this somehow…

I’m trying to use this method:
    2) Translate the theme and plugins using WPML’s String Translation and load .mo files as backup

So, all I ever did was upload the .mo file to the languages directory using FTP. Then separately I use WPML to translate other strings here and there. I never imported anything from the po file into WPML.

I looked at the steps at https://wpgeodirectory.com/support/topic/translating-country-slug/page/2/#post-380130 but it seems like that is importing stuff from the mo file via WPML which I assumed we don’t want to do since we’re using method “2” above (which just uses .mo file as backup, not integrated into WPML in any way). Is this correct?

A little more info: I’ve always used both methods, i.e. po/mo files for plugins/theme translation and WPML string translation for things that the po/mo files didn’t cover (like titles of widgets and the site tagline). Using po/mo files, when possible, seems to be the better solution since they are portable and can be used across sites. The po file can also be version controlled which is nice. Using WPML string translation seems better for site-specific stuff (again, like titles of widgets and the site tagline). I’ve never had an issue mixing po/mo file usage with WPML string translation usage, and in fact, I believe WPML specifically tries to play nice by allowing you to choose if you want to use WPML only or WPML first with po/mo files as a backup.

I’ve always used the latter for the reasons mentioned above. I’d like to continue using the latter with GD (meaning upload the mo file and modify minimal things with WPML as needed). I’ve got multiple sites and it has been nice to change a common (version controlled) translation and then just re-upload to all sites (rather than messing around with WPML on all sites).

The only real problem I’ve ever run into is GD using the Japanese strings on the admin site when I have my language set to English. Since other plugins don’t do this, I was wondering if GD is doing something with translations that is different than other plugins.

Is the scenario I like possible with GD?

So, do I not do the core translation steps at all and the Japanese core po/mo files are never uploaded?

I followed your standard “translate core” instructions here:

    https://wpgeodirectory.com/docs/translate-core/

I had no idea about this “importing” into WPML string translation thing. I saw no mention of WPML on that page… What is the difference in doing the “standard core” and what you describe above?

Also, what do the fuzzy ones have to do with this?

    Thanks!

Can you give me the comment number of the steps you’re referring to? I see in #380572 the fix for “schools” but not the fix for “Japan” being shown as “日本” on the English page.

That’s weird. There must be something different between prod and staging. I just exported prod and re-imported it over staging so you can see the issue appearing on staging.

Thanks. Sure, go ahead and import on staging.

Also, are the fixes that were completed going to make it into the main release? I see #1 still seems to be happening in the latest release of the core code… haven’t checked the others.

The “schools” issue is the one that is fixed. It is the “Japan / 日本” issue that remains. I still see breadcrumb trails like this:

    … Businesses > 日本 > Tokyo > …

where the middle one should say “Japan” in English. Above you’d said “I am still looking more to find problem.” so still thought maybe you were looking into how that one got fixed since it is working on the stg site now. Did you not do anything specific to fix that and it just “magically” got fixed?

    Ok, great, thanks!

    1. It will be under 2K for the foreseeable future. If I do need it later, is it just a simple enabling of the module to switch to clusters with no big changes required?

    2. Great! Are there any docs detailing the two methods or can you give me the starting off points if it requires customizations?

    3. Ok, thanks for the update.
