I am surprised that you don’t see the value of returning results by distance AND allowing them to be sorted by custom fields if requested, especially for those customers of yours that have global listings in their install of GeoDirectory.

I will make my request on the page you provided and in the mean time try to find a way to work around your design choice.

okay maybe I am confusing you on what I am trying to accomplish.

I want my users to be able to search my listings with a zip code or city/state, then get the nearest results but have those results pre-sorted by my predefined priority.

So when a user searched by zip 12345 what they would get is a listing result list like this:

    Listing Item D
    Distance: 41 Miles
    Priority: 1

    Listing Item A
    Distance: 25 Miles
    Priority: 2

    Listing Item B
    Distance: 27 Miles
    Priority: 3

    Listing Item E
    Distance: 44 Miles
    Priority: 4

    Listing Item C
    Distance: 35 Miles
    Priority: None

Notice that the listing results are not ordered by distance, but by the custom field “Priority” that I created and assigned values too in each listing.

I have a live version of Geo v1.1.8 that accomplishes this, but on my test server where I have the latest version of Geo I am unable to get this type of sorting accomplished.

I have attached some screen shots for reference (personal info has been blacked out) of each install doing a search of the zip code 45502. As you can see, on the v1.1.8 install the search gathered the listings within my predefined radius and then organized them by my custom field “priority”.

But on the v1.3.8 the results are not organized by priority but rather just by distance, even though I have set it as the default sort order.

I hope this clears up what I am trying to accomplish and will help you to tell me what needs to be set/changed in the latest version of Geo to work properly.

I really think you should consider allowing results to be sorted universally.

With the current search implementation If a user is going to a site running GeoDirectory and want’s to search for restaurants in a specific zip or city, then sort by the restaurants that have a vegan menu, or some other specific trait they would be unable to.

So any site running GeoDir in a multi-location setup would have there search functionality extremely limited to this narrow view of “distance first, and nothing else”

Are you sure these is no other way to perform a location specific search then be able to sort by custom fields (ex: vegan/non-vegan, pet friendly/non pet friendly, Pool/No Pool, etc…)?

So there is no way to sort options if you have specified a location to search by?

So if someone wanted to look up restaurants in zip code “12345”, they could not sort by star rating or by any other measure, it would just be by distance from zip “12345”?

That seems odd. This also seems to be a new feature, as my live version of GeoDirectory that is running v 1.1.8 does allow this kind of sorting.

Why was this changed, and is there plans to be able to allow universal sorting at some point in the future?

Okay I did some testing and it seems that no matter what I put as the default sort order it ALWAYS sorts by distance. Even if I add multiple sort options, then do a search and try to change the sort order of the results, they always stay the same.

    Any thoughts?

I am actually using GeoDir as a yelp for computer technicians for the company I work for. Buy we are also adding things like locations for accounts that we service. So I have a CPT of “Technicians”, and another called “Account Locations”.

What I’d like to do is if one of our service desk employees looks up an account location for “Company A”, I would like to have a one click search of the CPT “technicans” for the techs in the area based off of the account locations zip code.

I know What I am asking for is a bit specific, but it would be handy to prevent our service desk having to perform two searches: one for the account location, the other for techs in the area of that locations zip.

One last thing: I forgot that I had updated to the latest Geodir version. I had a back up of the last version, I rolled back to that version and the csv upload works now, buuuuttttt my bread curmbs are throwing errors ( see attached pic).

I am going to stick with the latest version and wait and see if the upload can be fixed.

I didn’t check the individual place posts. I had a plugin that automatically set comments to disabled when posts were generated, so all new places had their comments set to off. I when in and enabled comments for each place and good to go. Sorry for the fuss

I wouldnt be able to do that at this time. Can you tell me if the ability to comment in Geo Directory is tied to the ability to comment in WP or are the separate from each other?

Yeah that was my first thought but WP doesn’t like that. I have been testing my install with this change and so far its working fine.
