BuddyPress + GD + a not-Compatible Theme

Greetings:

I am quite interested in adding BP to my site especially since GD is well integrated through this plugin. However, the theme I use (Theme Grill’s ColorMag) is not integrated with BP and has not been designed for that purpose.

In your experience, does running BP with GD in a theme that is not fully integrated with BP can still be done without too much hurdle, is not recommended at all or is the worst thing I could think of?

Even though I understand that you can probably not come up with a definitive answer, I would appreciate your overall impression and experience in this matter while I consider this option and before I waste a ton of hours into it.
