We just received a note from a customer that could not add an event. They get “Could not update post in database” message.

The client used the Switch To plugin, tested with Safari, and got the same message. But was able to add the event as admin.

I used the Switch To plugin, tested Safari, Chrome, and Firefox, and could not replicate the issue.

    Any thoughts on this?

Are there any known issues with using special characters in category names and tag names?

I have not seen that issue before “Could not update post..” . It doesn’t ring familiar as a GD error. If you can replicate, let us know.

For category and tag names, no, no issue. The characters should be within the charset of the database you are using or they might be converted to ascii.
