Not sure if I should be posting this in here or not, tried searching the internet for answers and can’t find anything regarding a directory.

Does anyone know how the EU law changes regarding data will affect a directory and it’s listings?

I know we are currently ok to add listings with out permission but how does this stand with the new laws? Business location for example.

I can’t find an answer anywhere.

    Thanks.

I am looking into this but from what I can tell is that the purpose of the law is what you do with the personal data you collect from your users and not the addresses you are posting on your directory website.

So for example if you collect credit card information and purchasing patterns and sell that information to somebody and are not transparent in what you are doing and have not obtained the owners permission you would be faced with consequences under this law.

For businesses, posting their address should not be an issue. For individuals this obviously can be so I would think you would need their permission.

Do not consider this to be legal advice. It is always best to consult an attorney in your jurisdiction for legal advice.

I keep coming to the same point, stuck when it comes to a business location that also happens to be the person’s home.

Bed and Breakfast for example, the law talks of ‘personal data’ but does not make clear what personal data is classed as.

Also it says you need permission to use personal data, could that be a business location, or is it referring more to other things.

I’m stuck at the ‘if you add a business to a directory with out the owners knowledge/permission is that legal or not’?

I know it’s good to seek the OK anyway but when your just starting up and trying to build content plus get the public to view the website so you have a sales pitch I guess.

My approach is simple. If the data is publicly available, like an address, there is no need to request permission to post this to your directory. This would apply to businesses. For people I would request permission or just post their city/country details.

    Hello,

Just an idea here, mind you.

I was thinking about AirBnB, how they use that big transparent circle to mark an area?

For folk operating from home, why not give them a default category with a map icon like that?

It would be a larger PNG, maybe 150px*150px or larger, with a semi-transparent circle. You could even offset the circle, maybe 50px off center to the upper left, to make certain that the location is not perfectly marked.

We recently added a snippet example of how a developer might swap out a category icon on the detail page, but, you could just as well hide the category icons on the detail page, given that these listings would have a different package ID specific to the case.

    https://wpgeodirectory.com/docs/faqs/what-are-some-examples-of-changes-that-a-developer-can-make-to-the-listings-page/

This would only be especially for sites that listed these kinds of folks, I think, a way to make sure to put the best foot forward to respect these self – employed business owners.

I think it may not need be said, but, anyone who works from home should already well aware that they should not publish their home address with the chamber of commerce or the like unless the want it to get picked up and published all over the place.

    Interesting idea Alex!

I like the way GeoDirectory Experts is set up. City and country. That would work perfectly for home businesses.
