Default Custom Post Type

I really don’t want the “Place” custom post type. I edit it and change it to slug etc. I want, but certain things cannot be changed. For example, “Popular Places” shows up instead of the the name I’ve changed it to. I understand how to use custom post types and initially created a new post type. The problem was on the home page the map defaults to “Places” and show “no records found”. Is there anyway to change/eliminate the Place post type? If not, can it be set not to show up on the map, popular places etc?
