When visiting a category page, and then making selections using the provided filter.
After clicking search, the category is forgotten and the entire directory is searched instead of filtering the category.

    This can be seen here:
    https://dev.shoppingonline.ie/shops/category/bicycle-shops/
e.g. then choose one of the filters, e.g. “Shops based in”.

I’ve tried adding Category to the filter using Places>Settings>Search, but the category in the filter is shown as “select option”

    Hello,

the category autocomplete suggestions will direct the user to the appropriate category archive page.

To complete a search using category, then yes you will need to add category to the search bar as a drop down.

It is possible to turn off the category suggestions/autocomplete dropdown with the Advanced Search addon options in

GD – Settings – Advanced Search – Show Advanced – Show search suggestions with

    Hi Alex,

We’ve done that but when using the filter, the category is missed from the search terms.

    Example here:
    https://dev.shoppingonline.ie/shops/category/bicycle-shops/

    Hello,

Please say more about the issue. The link you provide is not a search page. It is a category Archive page, using the Archive template.

Sorry, you’re correct, this is an archive page – but this is what gd_search sends us to.

    1. If you go to the homepage: https://dev.shoppingonline.ie/
    2. Using the search box (this uses the [gd_search] shortcode), click and choose “Bicycle Shops”.
    3. You’ll arrive at the “Bicycle Shops” listings, https://dev.shoppingonline.ie/shops/category/bicycle-shops/
    4. If you then click the cog next to search (this uses [gd_search] shortcode, and select “US”, and click search. You’ll see results for other categories.

A user would assume that if they’ve clicked through the search to select a category, that this search filter would further filter the search.

How can we solve this so that it’s more logical?

The search options will apply on the search page.

The category of the page is not captured in the advanced search options where you have setup category.

You have set the category as an advanced search option. The user will need to select it again, there.

In the next version of GD the category select dropdown in the search bar will stay selected on the matching category archive page, but only if you have added it as a drop down.

    Hi

We have upgraded to the latest version but this did not seem to resolve this issue.

    Kind Regards

Are you using a category select drop down in the search bar? The change only applies to the behavior of that category select on CPT Category Archives.

I’ve tried this both with and without a category dropdown in the search. With this, the category isn’t populated with the users’ choice, and without it, the category isn’t passed through.

Have you tried this out yourself? It’s simply not been thought about that visiting a CATEGORY should remember this in the filter.

It’s meant to be a filter, not a new search.

The new feature works on my test site. When I view the category archive, the category select dropown in the search bar is automatically set to the corresponding category.

This page does not have the dropdown setup
