    Hello GD support,

Can the WordPress categories that GD custom post types create be used as standard WordPress post categories?

For instance, I have a “Bike” CPT category in GD. Can I also assign standard WP posts to the “Bike” category, and will they show up when I sort specifically for the “Bike” category so I can keep everything related to the “Bike” category together?

I ask because the Genesis Magazine Pro theme uses category pages with the category ID to create the magazine “section” pages. Because I’m going to be writing posts/articles on my GD categories, it seems ideal to be able to use one category for both GD directory listings and related WP posts but I’m not sure it works that way.

Please let me know what I’m missing.

    Thanks for your assistance.

Any category can only belong to one post type at the same time.
I doubt that the Genesis Magazine Pro theme can create magazine pages using any other categories than the standard WP categories, but you can just try that.
Let us know how you went.

    Thanks for the explanation, Guust.

Is there an acceptable workaround that’s invisible to visitors and readers?

Any listing or post can never be in two different post types at the same time, so I am not sure what you are asking.
GD uses its own pages to display the categories: yoursite.com/places/bike for example.

    Got that.

My site will be 25-30% directory, with the bulk of the content being articles on posts and pages. Hence, I’ll be using WP categories more than GD categories so they have to integrate in an almost invisible way for readers. I don’t readers trying to figure out what the difference is between one category and another.

Using the current example, if I have a GD category “Bike” and I create a WP category “Bike,” the default duplicate WP category name will be “bike-1,” which isn’t very useful for readers. If I name it “Biking,” that might work or might be confusing.

Here’s a question: Can a GD category be a sub-category of a WP parent category?

If I switch it around and make the WP categories the parent categories, i.e. “Bike,” then maybe I can make the GD categories a sub-category, “Bike Guide.” That would be more clear for readers and a simple solution.

And, if I can’t make the GD category a sub-category of a WP category, it can still work as well and be clear to the readers.

I hope that makes more sense?

As always, thanks for your help.

Any category {including sub-categories] can only belong to one post type at the same time, so a GD category cannot be a sub-category of a WP parent category.
Just like a category of the Events CPT never can be the same as a category of the Places CPT.
They can have the same Name, but not the same Slug.
So you can call the GD ones “Bike tracks” and the WP one “Bike articles’ etc

You will not be able to create a taxaonomy/category page with two different categories at the same time.

    Thanks, Guust.

    Wishful thinking!

    Much appreciated.
