Ok – I have followed the steps shown below to the letter

I have placed notes in between the steps showing where things go wrong

    Client ID

This setting requires that you create and activate a new Google API Project.

Create a new project here: https://console.developers.google.com/project
    Done with no issue

Go into your new project and select “APIs & auth > APIs”
    Done with no issue

Search or select “Analytics API” and then click “Enable API”
Done – first time round the api was enabled as soon as it was created – I deleted the project entirely and started again and this time it asked me to enable it, which I did

Go to “APIs & auth > Credentials” then “Create new Client ID” and select “Web Application” (you may be asked to add a product name first, just add a name and save and you will be taken back to the correct screen)
Done but it presents three options

Please see the images in order as they are shown

API Key gives create a new key which I followed steps for but no secret question

    Client id gives last screen

Have google changed things? Have I got something wrong? Any ideas?

You need to choose OAUth 2.0 (look at the top of the screen, there are 2 links, one to OAuth consent screen, and one for credentials).
