    Every location should have its own URL like
    http://wpgeo.directory/location/united-states/illinois/chicago/
    http://wpgeo.directory/location/united-states/
    http://wpgeo.directory/location/united-states/illinois

    And each of these pages indicates the preferred URL like this:
    <link rel=’canonical’ href=’http://wpgeo.directory/location/whatever-place-you-are/’ />

    Am I misunderstanding?

    You have two options, disable Yoast SEO from managing Canonical urls and let GeoDirectory do it (Yoast SEO have no clue about locations being custom GD elements) or ask to he plugin author to add full compatibility with GeoDirectory.

    Thx
