I attempted to import Places onto a new site, and even though it says 2344 items were updated, no places were imported.

    Steps I took:
    1. Import categories (most imported correctly but I had to make a few changes)
    2. Create a test place
    3. Import items

If you want to import these as new listings you will want to remove the value from the ID Column.

    Magic, thank you!
You’ve been a life saver today, thanks Alex!
I was wrestling with this one for a few days now.

If I’m exporting from one site and importing into another site, is there an easy way to preserve the categories? It looks like they’re also based on ID, and on import all places came through without a category. (I had previously imported categories from this same site)

There is not, categories will almost always have different IDs on different sites. WordPress is very ‘human scale’ that way.

I’m totally going to use the phrase ‘human scale’ next time one of my engineers complains about servers not scaling 🙂 🙂

Oh, just figured out a quick workaround for this, I’ll create a gloriously large switch statement in excel to map between cat ids and just do a quick manual copy/paste in the spreadsheet.
As long as I save the switch statement I’ll be able to do future imports pretty easily.

    Thanks!
