    Just curious if anyone is using open maps in any websites in stead of google. Just had a fun little email from them about this.
    https://mapsplatform.googleblog.com/2018/05/introducing-google-maps-platform.html

    Which means you now to to get CC’s from any clients who are using it to create a cloud payments account for them. If you use one account for many sites, you will hit the threshold fairly fast.

    Anyway – good or bad thing, meh. BUT Is open maps good for production of directories?

    Thanks 🙂

    Hello,

    The vast majority won’t be affected by this, its more of an inconvenience if they force everyone to submit billing details. If you want to used Open Street Maps (OSM) then GD already has that option, infact if you have your maps set to “Auto” (which it is by default) if google maps api fails to load then OSM will take over, so for example people viewing your site in countries where Google is banned will auto see OSM instead of broken maps. I’m not sure how google will implement the hard limit but i would hope we can do something similar.

    The vast majority use Google but i have seen some using OSM in the wild.

    Thanks,

    Stiofan

    It is my understanding it is per project, not per account. But not sure …

    Thanks Stiofan. That helps. So they can bounce between the two ok. For instance if they go above 200, they can opt to go to OSM. Great news. Think I will try OSM on a few smaller ones and see how it goes. Keep google for the travel sites and horse site.

    @guust, “It is my understanding it is per project, not per account. But not sure …” – That would be good. Makes sense, otherwise people would just start setting up a new account for every project and using virtual CC’s to enter into it. I wonder if they will pop a 1c purchase or verification through every month to check the card is valid.

    Going to email them to get a final answer on that.

    Thanks all

    At the moment google measure for accounting per project. Also for the free content. In the last 12 months I have not exceeded the free content and they do not check the validity of my cc. All at the moment.

    @stiofan,
    I’m not sure if the free content is exceeded that GD will automatically switch to OSM. I think it is the same as if the google API authorization fails GD does not switch to OSM automatically (with the settings auto).

    Best,
    Dirk
