    Hi,

I’ve found several issues when using GD on an iPhone or an iPad. I haven’t yet tested with Android devices.

Please let me know if I’ve overlooked some configuration parameters to address these issues.

My installation uses Genesis and a Genesis Child theme (Minimum Pro). That said, I’m seeing similar issues on the Avada test installation (http://dropct.com/avada/ ) and the Enfold test installation (http://dropct.com/enfold/ ).

    1) The tabbed interface is problematic. When clicking on one of the tabs, the tabs scroll off the top of the page. The user has to scroll back up to get to the navigation. Perhaps a better solution would be a mobile-only menu hidden behind a hamburger icon?

    2) The MAP tab does not seem to be mobile aware. It looks like the user has to type in his current location, rather than getting it from the mobile device. I’d be OK if you asked the user permission to access his current location, or if you simply transferred to the mobile device’s default map app to get directions to the listed business. (BTW, this problem exists on traditional and laptop computers too. Some browsers support location-aware browsing, but it does not appear that GD does.)

    3) When entering reviews, the interface to add “files” or “photos” does not work on an iPhone or an iPad. I doubt it will work for an Android device, either. At a minimum, GD needs access to the device’s photos.

    Hi Mike,

    1) we can definitely have a look and improve

    2) we didn’t add that because Google geolocation can get you location with few hundred meteres of approximation. Most of the time and especially on mobiles it doesn’t get your precise location. We thought that giving you direction from a location 300 meters from you, wasn’t a good experience either, so we added Google autocompleter so that once typing your address, it is autocompleted. Only an app can easily access data from the Phone GPS system.

    3) We’ll have a look at iOS, on my android it works as expected.

    Thanks

    Thanks for the update, Paolo.

I need to challenge on your #2 response:

    >>2) we didn’t add that because Google geolocation can get you location with few hundred meteres of approximation. Most of the time and especially on mobiles it doesn’t get your precise location. 300 meters may be the worst-case scenario, but I have never experienced anything that bad on my iOS devices, even using a web app. Best case, of course, is about 3 meters, as long as the mobile device has clear access to two GPS satellites. 10-20 meters is more typical when using just cellular or Wi-Fi networks.

Also, when you say: “Only an app can easily access data from the Phone GPS system” … I do not believe that is correct. See here:

    https://developers.google.com/web/fundamentals/device-access/user-location/obtain-location?hl=en

While I agree that it’s a fine idea to offer autocompleter as one of the user interface options, I do not think it should be the default, and certainly not the only option, especially on a mobile device. (I have never seen a mobile site use autocompleter for displaying my current location. Do you know of any prominent sites using this technique?)

I also think it would be OK to use the built-in map apps as the primary source for directions. That way, the user can get turn-by-turn directions from the built-in map app on both iOS and Android devices.

    Hi Mike,

this has being discussed in another topic today too and Stiofan agreed to add the geolocation in the Get Direction field. It’s been already added as a task and will be introduced in a future release.

Can’t promise a date yet, but it should be fairly simple to implement.

    Thanks

    That’s Outstanding, Paolo.

    Thanks!

Let me add one last thought: however GD decides to implement this, I do think you should provide an option to hand off the destination location to the mobile device’s map app as an alternative. I often use turn-by-turn directions when traveling, and I think it would be a very useful option to offer from GD sites.

    Thanks, again!

    Hi,

I’d like to know the status of the geolocation update. It’s been six months since we last discussed this.

    Hi Mike,

This was put in as a feature request and not a bug so was pushed to the bottom of the pile, i will try and work on this today or very soon and i will update you here.

    Thanks,

    Stiofan
