I have two levels of categories, parent and child.

    1. I want to allow free listings to only have one category, but the parent category is always selected, plus one child category, so they actually get into two categories. (see 2.)

    2. When creating a listing I do not want ANYONE to be able to select a parent category – I want the Parent Category to be a header category only. If I don’t allow the parent category to be selected, will this break functionality elsewhere?

    3. Is there anyway, now or planned, to present the categories in a hierarchy showing the Parent category and the child categories underneath. The current display is ugly and confusing. In the second image below, I only have two businesses listed but the categories are all over the place and it appears that I have 4 listings, not 2.

    1. In Pricing you can choose which categories are available for free listings. Setting that combined with allowing only one category to be picked should solve that? I don’t think you can be in a child category without being in the parent category.

    2. No, see above.

    3. Have you tried the different settings for category display type in gd > place settings > custom fields > categories ( taxonomy)

Thanks Vikas for putting me right.
I since had a test and now see what the trouble is. Glad you picked it up 🙂

    Thanks Vikas,

A reasonable display for Parent->Child categories will be enough for me, it is unusable currently.

OK, another issue I have found with this is that ONLY the parent category can be selected as the Default category, which means that the wrong icon gets displayed on the map?

Does the “Default” category have any other significance than specifying the icon?

I need for a child category to be selected as the default category.

    See attached…

Was purpleedge’s #3 point ever resolved? The lack of hierarchy for the listing headers doesn’t work very well.

You can use the “Place Categories” and other “Custom Post type categories in the WP menu settings if you want to build your own menu.

The “popular” category widget will show the categories with most listings in order of “popularity” with users adding listings.
