Currently I only have 4 different places categories for our directory. Its a niche directory so this is what you would expect.

How to I replace the “Search for” text box with a drop down that exposes only the 4 categories.

I don’t want to add a secondary search box as I saw in another post as that just creates a more complicated user experience.

i.e. in this example http://wpgeo.directory/hotels/ the user should be able to use a dropdown do choose 3, 4 star hotels.

At the moment searching for hotels stars using autocomplete seems poor behaviour.

Also is there any way of getting the location search box to recognize postcodes/ all suburbs in the city area? Or do I have to enter every single neighborhood manually?

The Search For field also searches titles, descriptions, categories and tags.
If you want visitors to filter by category the best way is to add the category drop down using tbe advanced search addon.
Then go to GD > place settings > custom fields and add the category field to the advanced search.
That is how the Customize Search function wkrms at http://wpgeo.directory/hotels/
The Near field searches for postcodes and suburbs already.

Thanks for the reply! Ok that makes sense

How did you get it to appear as a dropdown rather than as an option beneath the “Customize my search” button?

Also regarding postcodes, I am not getting these Autocomplete for Australian postcodes. Even for locations I have manually put in, most definitely not for all postcodes in the country, which would make sense. Am I missing something here?

    Hi,

autocompleter in the near field will only return location names (country/region/city).

To make the category advance search a select field, pleae go to GeoDirectory >> Place settings >> Advance Serch, double click on catgeory and on Field Data Type option, select “SELECT”.

Let us know how you went,

    Thanks
