Scraped Google maps image import from URL doesn't work

I have a list scraped from Google maps.

In the scraped content there is the main Google listing image URL. For example:

If you right click on the image in that listing, this is the link:

If I try to import a file with that image URL or try adding that listing manually using that link it doesn’t pull the image (when entering that URL during the manual listing entry process this message is displayed: “File type error. Allowed file types: .jpg, .jpeg, .jpe, .gif, .png”)

Interestingly, when I try manually adding the image again, the directory GD navigates to for the importing of that file is now a temp directory associated with the browswer and the image is in that temp directory)

Using Google I found this prior GD question/answer (which really got my hopes up):

Of course, the ability to import directly from the URL speeds up the process dramatically…

Hi Duane,

Thanks for your post. Unfortunately, you can use that type of link on GD or WP. You’ll need to download the image manually and upload it as a valid jpg file.

V2 will download the image but it does require it to have a valid file extension.

I apologize for not saying thank you for your replies.

I addressed the issue by having a Freelancer friend create a downloader that takes the URLs that Google provides in the places listings and downloads the actual image file that ultimately appears in the listing.

Using proxies it downloaded 14,000+/- images in roughly 1 hour.

It named the image files based on the Google Places business name and the first 10 characters of the business address (primarily to address franchises where there might be 50 or more businesses in a scraped list all of the same name) so a file can easily be associated by sight which business/location it applies to.

Still working on other aspects of the look/feel and hope to go live, soon.
