I noticed when I go to my homepage and use the search field to “Search for” “Hart” everything works fine and the HART listing comes up.

If I search “Search for” “Hart” near me it does not come as it shouldn’t come up because it is not near me. If next I untick “Near me” and then search for hart again it does not come up. This is problematic.

You need to clear the “near” field by going to another page or reloading the page.
The page has been told to be “near you” and just clearing the field cannot reset that session.

    It’s definitely broke.

It works correctly on the homepage though. On the homepage if I select it I am able to deselect it and whatever I select after that behaves correctly. On the homepage when I select near the value in the cell goes to “near:me” and when I deselect it the value goes back to “near” but on the list page it seems to stay stuck in the “near:me”.

It also works correctly on the list page going one way but not the other. So, if you go to https://thingstodoinnc.com/attractions/ and then narrow it down to “near:me” it works that way showing me results near me. But, if you undo near me it suddenly shows nothing. It show’s “No listings found which match your selection.”

So, this is totally counter-intuitive to the point that it’s definitely broke. This would make a visit think there’s nothing near them when there is or that there’s nothing at all even when there is.

But the homepage is not set to a particular location, so the page is not remembering anything, going to the homepage is what resets the system’s location.

If you use a different location after you search near you, it will also resets because you go to a new search page. Clearing the field does not reset the location, it just clears the field.

I see what you’re saying about the home page. But there is still the issue with not being able to deselect it after it’s been used.

When a person visiting the site selects near me, uses near me, and then deselects near me and does a completely different search it needs to go back to “not near me. Right now it doesn’t go back to not near me or near me, it goes to not showing ANYTHING even if there was things near me and not near me.

    This is clearly a problem.

All I was saying about the homepage, which I see it does this on the other pages too, is if you select near me, don’t search, and then deselect near me it clears out near me. Every time near me is deselected it should clear out near me, right now it breaks.

To reiterate specifically toward what you said “Clearing the field does not reset the location, it just clears the field.” It does not clear anything when deselecting the near me check box.

See, if someone selects a check box and that does something, deselecting it should undo that. It’s really rather simple. This currently violates that simplicity. Furthermore, when deselecting it and searching no results are rendered when there should be.

Also, when typing in the near field, the suggested cities show like a hundred pixels below the field.

Also, when “in” is applied it only shows listings “in” that city. When “in” is not applied it shows things beyond that city. I only understand this because I took time to toy with it via the front end. However, you should know as well as I do that you don’t want visitors to bounce away from your site. And that is exactly what they’ll do when things start appearing broken or confusing. This “in” deal may be a cool feature but the functionality is not very well evident via the front end and becomes confusing when sometimes it appears to be delivering different results when inadvertently using “in” and not using it searching near a city instead.

Maybe there’s something I’m missing, some settings I can tweak or something to make it all work more intuitively for me?

“Also, when typing in the near field, the suggested cities show like a hundred pixels below the field.”
Can you give a URL of where we can see that?

“Near” is not for cities, but for specific locations, like “Greensboro Coliseum”. But if you put only put in Greensboro without any further specifications, then the system will use assume you meant the center or Greensboro. If a visitor wants to find listings near 123 Main Road, Smithville, NC, the system will do that too.
If you think the searches are too wide, you can reduce the radius at GD > General > Search.

You can turn of the “In” feature at GD > Advanced Search > Enable Near autocompleter.
You can change the Near text to “Enter a location to search”, then your visitors should know that if they want to do another search, leaving it blank will not reset things.

    You could

Regarding the first thing, it was with “Supreme” theme. I have attached an image of it.

I probably shouldn’t have changed themes when I’m inquiring about issues. I just keep finding issues, some of which appear to be resolved by changing themes. I have spent so much time on this that it’s often hard to wait for a response.

Regarding near, I like your suggestions, thank you!

I understand how it works when using In or not using In. Your suggestions for removing or relabeling that are viable resolves for me to consider. But, the fact that un-checking the “Near Me” does not clear Near Me, that’s super buggy. Once this near me not clearing issue is resolved the Near Me feature could very possibly be something I would love to use.

See image as to how the city suggestions looks for me in Chrome, FF and IE.

This is not a bug and there is nothing to resolve. Unticking or ticking a checkbox will not have any effect until you send that choice to the server by changing or reloading the page. Thanks.

The image I posted is from Chrome too.
Can you clear all your caches and have a look in another browser, I checked in 3 and all is fine.

Actually, checking near me does do something. Once you check “Near me” the field says “near:me”. Then selecting the search icon renders near me results.

When you then un-select near me near me doesn’t clear out of the search field (problem one). So, checking it does do something, unchecking it does nothing.

Then, even more problematic, (problem two) is after unchecking it and then selecting the search icon I am brought back “No listings found which match your selection.” which is totally a problem.
And, again, unlike checking “near: me” and clicking search and getting results, un-checking “near:me” and clicking search renders no results.

What should happen is, when unchecking “near:me” the field should clear and go back to just “near”. What should happen is, when unchecking “Near:me” and selecting the search icon, I should absolutely get results, I should get all results as I would if I only selected the search icon and had never checked/unchecked “Near:me” to begin with.

    This is absolutely a problem.

Also, if selecting a CPT from the navigation, near:me stays in the search field. this makes it appear that the results are near me. But, they’re not. Selecting a CPT from the navigation or a category from the popular categories should either clear near:me also or, even better, actually show near:me and whatever distance. I can live with this, it’s just very accurate functionality/an intuitive interface…

Cool, I just went to it using “in-private browsing” and like you said, it’s good there 🙂 Thanks

Now, if we can just get past this “near:me” glitchiness…
