Shall I use Custom Fields or Tags?

We have moved to a support ticketing system and our forums are now closed.

    I have two Custom Post Types and Events.

    They are different but they will also have 2 things in comming. Like Levels and Styles. So each of them will be able to choose several of these two.
    How shall I do this the best way, is it tags or custom fields, or something else? I want to have like checkboxes on the front end.
