Spell out a region or use the abbreviation?

    Is it preferable to Spell out a region or use the abbreviation? I like the abbreviation space wise, and have steered all of my listings that way. But I notice that when managing locations and you set a location on the Map the software spells out the region automatically. Is this a preference setting or a default reflecting best practices?
