    Hi there,

I’ve been building my directory for a week or two and the first major problem I’ve run into is how to structure locations in New York with the available fields. Hoping someone with some experience of dealing with this has found a good way. Not having local knowledge doesn’t help, but there are so many areas within other areas I need to decide what the best approach is.

    I’ve been working with:

    Country> United States
    Region > New York
    City > New York
Neighbourhood > Borough of New York (eg Brooklyn)

This seems to be the best compromise and the best URL structure for SEO I’ve been able to find, even though somewhere like Brooklyn is too big to be a neighbourhood.

However – what about places in Long Island? I understand that locals use the term to mean Nassau and Suffolk Counties which I don’t think are part of New York City, but Long Island technically includes Queens and Brooklyn.

All I can think of is that I need different structures to deal with New York City and everywhere else properly

    So for New York city:

    Country> United States
    Region > New York
    Sub-region > Long Island
    City > New York
    Borough > Brooklyn
    Neighbourhood > Williamsburg

    Long Island/Everywhere else:

    Country> United States
    Region > New York
    Sub-region > Long Island
    County > Nassau County
    City > Hempstead
    Neighbourhood > [not required]

Is there a way to create this structure or a good compromise to use?

I hope that makes some sense, I’d really appreciate anyone’s thoughts on this!

    Hello!

The decisions about which location is assigned to ‘region’ is to the API you choose, either Google or OSM.

You can choose whether or not to use the locations slugs in the URL.

We recommend that you go ahead and add some listings to see how it works. You might add listings in each of the areas mentioned, and then decide whether or not you need to enable neighborhoods or not.

    Hi Alex,

I have added listings and I see how it works, though I’m yet to upload any New York ones. I’ll add a New York one manually and see what the API comes up with, thanks.

    Hello!

Yes, while you are building up your site, you might try coming up with 50 or 100 listings across the area. Then you can export those and use them again if you rebuild the site. You can also manually create more listings in nearby areas by creating your own dummy data right inside the spreadsheet.

Imported data doesn’t have to be accurate, as far as city or lat/lon is concerned, so you can do some interesting things for testing.
