theme activation

Do I have to download and activate both main and child theme> Or I doenload both but I activate only the child theme? The very first is the location settings or what could you tell me the priority I must follow?Thank you Nelly

Only one theme can be active at a time.
Download and install the parent and child, then activate the child.
