Hello all,
Wondering what other GD users — especially those who have used multiple themes with GD — prefer with GD and why.
My site will be a travel magazine and directory, so attractive photo galleries and blog post styles are important. Responsiveness is key.
I currently am working with Avada but have to admit I’m intrigued by the other gorgeous themes out there now that are compatible with GD and early enough in my site build-out to switch.
A link to your site would be welcome.
Thanks, everyone.
Marsha
June 6, 2015 at 11:20 pm #41746You can have a look here: https://wpgeodirectory.com/category/showcase/
There is only a few there, but it might give you ideas.
And then there are these ones, for Genesis or GDF.June 7, 2015 at 1:50 am #41748Thanks, Guust. I have looked at the showcase. Nice.
I’m more interested in hearing how well the themes work in the backend. I know not all themes are created equal. I’ve been reading some about how “bloated” themes like Avada can really slow down your site, so I just thought I’d ask.
June 7, 2015 at 2:40 pm #41764I am currently using Avada on a different project and have a second site in the works that is travel related. I find the Sky theme looks interesting but more important than that, I am spending a great deal of time optimizing the infrastructure of the site. Using things like NGINX as a reverse proxy server to Apache, Varnish etc is very important from what I have observed when running GD. Of course optimizing your site and it’s contents is important but I think too little attention is paid to the back end and that’s as important if not more so. For the travel related site I am actually using a VPS from Digital Ocean. It’s a steep learning curve but I think well worth the effort if you are intending this site to be a business.
June 7, 2015 at 4:42 pm #41769Thanks, justmark. This is the kind of feedback I was hoping to get.
I agree — backend optimization may be even more important.
To clarify, do you find the backend optimization is required because of the theme you are running or from running GD?
How can you tell?
June 7, 2015 at 5:48 pm #41770A lot of developers I talk to explained that GD is not just a simple plugin, in essence it is n application framework and they feel I am better off with a more robust back end than what a shared host can offer. While I cannot justify a dedicated server at this time, a VPS that can scale is a good way to start. And the prices have dropped. The only disadvantage is that you manage the server yourself. I would outsource this part if it but before I do I want to have a working knowledge of what my business is run on. I would take a look at either Digital Ocean or Linode for an idea of what can be done.
In my opinion the site infrastructure should be set up right from the get go which is why I am taking this approach.
Looking forward to see what you have in the works!

I’m using managed WP hosting at Lightning Base on the recommendations of Paolo and others here. I’m ready and willing to upgrade as needed.
June 8, 2015 at 9:28 pm #41839I have heard great things about Lightning Base as well.
