User roles to restrict access to various parts of the program would be greatly appreciated.

I would also think it prudent that you add the capability (which I have not found yet in the program) that postings be approved by an administrator before going live.

If you want to restrict some areas of your site, you could use a membership plugin.
If you explain better what restrictions you are thinking about, then we can be more specific with an answer.

To approve listing before going live:
GD > design > listings > New listing default status > Set to DRAFT

In response to reply #22365 – I would like to know if there is a simple third party plugin (or something in house) that would allow me to create a members only marketing section for my directory.

What I would like to do is create a ‘mastermind area’ that is only accessible to the paying members of my directory.

I have looked at using S2Member, but it is quite complicated – and seems to add another layer to my login process, so is there another option that you could recommend?

    Thanks

    Hi,

There are several membership plugins both free and premium that could do it. S2Member is one of the most popular and let me tell you that none of them is really super simple.

We use membership from wpmudev, but we had to customize it quite a bit to make it work the way we wanted and I wouldn’t really recommend it.

I don’t have extended experience with any other, so I can’t really help pointing out which one would be the best for you.

    Thanks

s2member looks complicated, but what you are trying to implement only uses a very small part of its capabilities, so should not be that difficult to implement.
You will have to disable GD’s login, see here for more details:

PS: post a job in GD jobs if you need a hand

Regarding this. I would like to make it so the regular logged in front end user (non-business Lister) is not able to see the “add a listing” option. Is that possible?

    Hi,

GD doesn’t make a difference between user and user. They are all the same for it.

    Thanks

    @veneuphoria
with a membership plugin like S2member it is possible, but not with GD by itself like Paolo says.
