What is the Merge City option for?

    I noticed a merge for city option. How does it work?

    Hi manilaboy,

    If you have multilocations installed it lets users add new locations, one might misspell a city name so you can then merge the misspelled city name with the correct city name if it was already added.

    In the US, locations are sorted like this:

    USA
    – State
    – County
    – City or Zip Code
    – Neighborhood

    How can we implement this?

    Hi,

    GD has 3 level of Address only, Country > Region > City and u can enable Neighborhood feature too. If 4 level of address will be in demand then we will definitely implement it.

    I think there’s a big demand now for the County option. Regions can be used for States but each state is divided by lots of counties. Califoria has Los Angeles County, Orange County, San Diego County, Ventura County, etc.

    These counties are divided by lots of cities. And each city has neighborhoods.

    What would make sense is to have these fields optional, activated by country. E.G. I have a directory that focusses on the greater Singapore region covering three countries – all have different administrative taxonomies:

    – Singapore has country/division/neighbourhood
    – Indonesia has country/province/regency/city/district/neighborhood
    – Malaysia has country/state/district/city/neighborhood

    Worse, not all are used… so, I would really sugggest that the country taxonomy can be setup individually, allowing the listing to either include all or just some parents.

    If you are working on a site in a country where more levels are required by the national address system, is it possible to expand/modify the address fields/levels using a plugin or some other method?

    My question is about how difficult it would be to properly implement the script for a country like Indonesia, as described above. Would it require hacking the core code, or is this something that could be implemented via some other method?

    Yes, County would be a big plus for us Go Local / Regional/ single State directories. Having a default County rather than a default City, would make a better home page map. I merged a smaller neighboring city, with my default city to get a broader main map. I would rather have the option of Region or County as the main page map.

    When I merged the cities, it is lost as an option for listing. So is there a way of having the region as the main starting map?.

    I think I already mentioned County in the wishlist and I completely agree it is a requirement for a lot US-based directories. I think it is also mandatory for a real estate directory where properties can be sorted by state, county, city, zip code and even neighborhoods. A County has many cities and a State has many counties.

    Paolo asked Vikas if geolocation options for regions and countries can be added at the backend. Regional geolocation might work for my site but a county level will be super.

    Is there any work around? I’m also interested in implementing County level in USA.
    I would even trade City with County if I must choose one…
