    When posting events the editor defaults to “text” mode instead of “visual” can the site be tweaked to open in “visual mode” instead.

    Next, I am using wp edit pro.. the buttons and tool bar. Can that be designed to be more attractive?

    GD > Design > Listings tab > Show description field as editor > Select Events.

    Not sure what you want to change on the toolbar and buttons, but you can ask support at https://wordpress.org/plugins/wp-edit/ ?
