Relevance is based on the presence of the keywords entered in the ‘search for’ field.
The better the match, in the title versus the description, the closer the result and the higher the listing shows in the search results.
For a near search results are ordered by distance.
For promoting featured and paid listings you can also show GD Listings on the search results page for more exposure.

For GD Categories, try some different settings for GD Categories. It has so many options. You probably want to show more categories or child categories.
