It is not possible to use the location page as the front page.
Making a different page the front page should be enough.You can still use the same page as your location page, and then make a new page as your front page, as you state above. It is only that the front page cannot be set to the location page in the GD settings for the location page.
Yes, GD themes have GD widget areas. Are you using Supreme? Make sure you are running the latest version of Directory starter and Supreme.

You will need to override this. You should add a custom class first as this directly overriding may impact other listings:

It looks like the site has been upgraded to GDV2 and run the converter, but that plugins were not upgraded.

If you do not want to upgrade now you should restore a backup.
