No worries. If I were paid by the bug, I’d be rich. 😉

    Hey Brian,

EWWW Image Optimizer is on wpengine’s banned plugins list, but the cloud service seems to work like a charm. Thanks for the suggestion.

    Cheers,
    Greg

    Hi Stiofan,

The site is hosted on wpengine and tests were run against the staging environment (no cache or cdn). The delay occurs when the core gd plugin is updated. The time to first byte for the /places/ landing page increased from 2.266s before the upgrade to 4.004s after.

The tests were repeated several times to ensure consistency. The production environment is far more performant, of course, but we still noticed enough of an increase in the time to first byte to warrant rolling back the upgrade.

I hope that helps narrow things down, but I’m happy to do further testing if you have anything specific in mind. We can’t upgrade production until this gets resolved.

On a performance-related note, I noticed that gd uses the original image as the thumbnail on listing and search pages, rendered as a background image. I understand the utility of this approach, but it creates a huge performance bottleneck, especially on sites like ours with user-submitted listings. We use the imsanity plugin to enforce a maximum height and width, but this only provides minimal improvement.

We also tested WP Smush.it, which adds an unacceptable delay when saving new listings. The WP Image Size Limit plugin doesn’t work with gd’s front-end image upload form. Is there any other image optimization method that we can implement with gd?

    Cheers,
    Greg

@stiofan Not counting replies makes total sense, but a review without a rating is still a review and should be counted. Take a look at the attached screenshot. It shows a title saying the listing has 0 reviews immediately followed by a review for that listing. Huh? To end users, this just looks like a bug.

I see two possible solutions: count reviews and ratings separately or make the rating field mandatory. Either way will provide an accurate review count and average rating divisor.

Looks like the issue is still active. The following listing has two reviews but shows a count of 0:

    http://torontomindbody.org/places/yoga-studios/gentle-beginnings-yoga-and-wellness/#reviews

And this listing shows a count of 5 reviews but actually has 6:

    http://torontomindbody.org/places/yoga-studios/lila-yoga-studio/#reviews

In both cases, the reviews with no rating are not included in the count.

As a follow up, part of the issue was that I applied some custom styling to the star rating widget on the listing comment form. This is because we noticed that visitors were posting reviews but not applying a rating, so we added some custom style to make the stars stand out more. Because of this issue, I removed the custom styling. It would be great if the star widget could stand out a little more, as I think people are missing it.

    Hi Paolo,

Thanks for following up. No, this issue was not resolved. As you can see from the thread, all I ever heard from Vikas is that he’s working on it. After a week I assumed the issue was abandoned and manually adjusted the incorrect data myself from within the database.

I have no idea if the cause was ever found or if the tool Stiofan mentioned was ever built. If you need to clean up the queue, feel free to mark this as resolved and I’ll open a new ticket if the issue comes up again.

    Cheers,
    Greg

If only one payment method is enabled, it should be selected automatically and hidden by default. Stripe payment popup shows article name and package as “undefined”. See attached screenshot for example.

Any movement on this? We couldn’t hold back other work any longer, so the staging environment has been updated.

    Here’s another weird one: http://torontomindbody.org/places/yoga-studios/lila-yoga-studio/

Sidebar shows a rating of 5.5 / 5 based on 2 reviews, however there are actually 5 reviews, three of which have star ratings.
