So if I understand correctly:
1. You go to Places > Place Categories
2. You click to edit an existing category
3. You choose another category as the parent
4. And when you try to save, what actually happens: what crashes, what do you mean exactly?
Can you post your admin details in a private reply, and more details of exactly what category you are trying to change and how.And of course, you can use a membership plugin like S2Member and charge to get access to the Add Listing page forever, or per year or whatever.
So pay to become a member and add as many free listings as you like.Just a thought: You can give coupons to users that have paid for a listing. You can add the code to the claim listing or other confirmation emails.
Why do you not just disable free listings?
You can just put a price per listing using the pricing addon.

You can only rate from the detail page.The same template (GD listing) is used for all Custom Post Types (places), its categories and subcategories. And you have found the solution all by yourself 🙂

Your directory homepage is at /location
/places is the Listings (category) page.
I added the GD>Gmap-Listings widget to the top section of the GD Listings template.

The map on the location/GD HOme page is put there with the GD Home Gmap widget. But I think you are talking about the Listings page.They can always use a URL shortening service, can’t they? Like tinyURL etc.

The search is not a IN search but a NEAR THE CENTRE OF search.
