This is also happening. Upon return to the homepage, with no location set. I tried to use the search bar. I selected restaurants within a 61 mile radius of me. The search returned no results. I live well within these search parameters.

    Hi Alex-

I just tried it again. On my side, it asked for redirection, it did not ask to allow geolocation, it loaded the Austin page. I live much closer to San Antonio than Austin, so it is not geolocating to the nearest location. When I go back to the home page, location does not stay at the Austin location, it goes back to Change Location.

An honest question, I’m not being snarky…but what is the point of having a home page if it does not contain location specific information when the user returns back, or if the user chooses geolocation, they don’t see it at all. Is the home page supposed to remain at “no location”, or should it remain at the last location the user geolocated to or selected from the location switcher? For the user to have to keep selecting their location from the home page, seems cumbersome from a UE point of view.

By the way…did you modify any of the settings when you checked it out so that it would geolocate and show the city name after geolocating to the location page? I’m asking so that if there were changes, I know what settings were causing it to load improperly.

    Best,
    Laura

    Hi Guust-

Thank you for your reply. I was able to find a workaround using UsersWP plugin with the GeoTravel theme.

Sorry, this one is out of order. This screenshot shows page loading and request to be geolocated. Screenshot after that is page loads, GD Home page is loaded, no city listed in url and no location is set in location switcher.

Could it be the Permatlink settings for the GeoDirectory Pages? These are the settings I currently have:

GD Home page set to GD Home page

Add listing page set to Add Listing

Listing preview page set to Listing Preview

Listing success page set to Listing Success

    Location page set to Location

Terms and Conditions page not set

    Info page set to Info

    Login page set to Login

Thank you for your patience. That is how I understood it to work, but that is not what is happening.
I am going to include a series of screenshots of my settings and what happens when I try to geolocate. I have used another computer, and an incognito browser to make sure it shows as a first time load:

    The screenshots show:

My advanced search filter set up to redirect and ask user to be geolocated.

    Multilocations set up to site-root.

Reading settings home page set to static page: Home

Home Top Widget Area with Popular Places Widget with “Enable Filter”

Home page with “Would You Like To Be Geolocated” pop up.

San Antonio location page with no location set in “Location Switcher”, still says “ChangeLocation.
When hovering over navigation menu, no city listed in url.

Manually selecting San Antonio from location switcher.

San Antonio page loads and now city is listed in place category urls.

Can you please help me figure out what is going wrong? As soon as I allow geolocation, the home page stops loading, and loads the location page, but no location is changed in the location switcher and urls do not include city.

I have to use the location switcher in order for the page to load to San Antonio, with the location switcher displaying “San Antonio” and the city name showing up in the url.

If I understand your reply, after the geolocation and allow location requests are granted, shouldn’t the home page load all the way, set to the nearest location, then the user can navigate around to the different categories, etc? Then if they want to change location, they can use the location switcher to view listings from other locations? I am surely missing something somewhere.

    Thank you,
    Laura

Last question, do any of the other themes built by GeoDirectory function like this “out of the box”? I liked the look of the travel theme, but it does not seem to work how I am wanting it to with the home page set up as it is.

Thank you, I get it now. If I do not use my current home page and use the GD Home Page as my home page, will it automatically geolocate users to their nearest location, like the original GeoDirectory Theme did? Before I upgraded to the plugin, the original version would automatically geolocate users to their nearest location and display local listings, as would the category links because they contained the city in the url.

This is what I’m trying to accomplish, to have the user geolocated to their nearest location upon first and subsequent page loads, unless of course they decide to use the location switcher to search in other cities.

Thank you for helping me figure all of this out!

Thank you for your reply. I do have the enable location filter checked in the Popular Posts widget. It is not filtering by location.

For the main navigation menu, I am not using a custom link, I’m using the Place Category link, where you can select one of the Place Categories to be added to the menu. Should the Place Category link filter by location? In the old GeoTheme, the site would geolocate you and then any time you selected a category from the main menu using Place Category, it would show you all of that category for that specific location. Should the plugin work the same way?

Thank you very much for your answer and information. I will have more than two locations eventually. I am testing with two right now. That should function well for what I am trying to accomplish.

I have a couple of related questions. I have it set to ask user if they wish to be geolocated, and it will geolocate me to the city location page, in this instance San Antonio. It will show me all listings under San Antonio. When I click on the navigation main menu “Restaurants”, it will return all restaurants from all locations, not just San Antonio. I have the menu linked to Place Categories (Restaurants, Attractions, etc).

Is there a way to set it up that when a user is located to a specific city, that the navigation menu that is linked to the place category, will only return results from that city until they use the location switcher to select another city? The way it is working now, it is cumbersome for the user to find exactly what they are looking for if they are geolocated to a city, then want to see all restaurants without using the search bar. Do you know if there is another theme that would function like this? Currently I’m using the Travel theme, but it is not returning listings as I had hoped.

On the home page, I have the popular places widget installed with the enable location filter checked. It still shows all places, not location specific. Is there a way to set it up that the home page will show only listings from the nearest loctaion and not all listings?

Thank you for your help…the plugin has a much steeper learning curve than the the original geo directory site.

Thank you for your help. Guess there is a learning curve and getting used to all of the different settings. Everything works perfectly now.

So sorry. I forgot that I blew away the site and recreated it. I was having so many issues once my SSL was installed, it was faster just to re-install everything.

I just created a user and password with the same login creds that I sent earlier.

    Thank you.
